  1. 1. Earthquake Sources and Hazard in northern Central America

    Author : Diego José Cáceres Calix; Ota Kulhánek; Vladimir Schenk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; Northern Central America; Probabilistic Seismic Hazard; Body waveform modeling; Seismic Active Deformation; Earthquake Triggering; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : Northern Central America is a tectonically complex zone defined by its borders with Cocos and North America plates. The Middle America subduction zone and the strike-slip motion along the North America-Caribbean plate boundary, in that order, control most of its deformation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Determinants and Effects of Central Bank Independence Reforms

    Author : Mats Landström; Karl-Gustaf Löfgren; Sven-Olov Daunfeldt; Andreas Bergh; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Monetary policy; institutional reform; central banking; price stability; political economy; delegation; institutional economics; inflation; time-inconsistency; accountability; nationalekonomi; Economics; Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of four empirically oriented papers on central bank independence (CBI) reforms.   Paper [1] is an investigation of why politicians around the world have chosen to give up power to independent central banks, thereby reducing their ability to control the economy. 3. 3. Statistical Seismology Studies in Central America : b-value, seismic hazard and seismic quiescence

    Author : David Aníbal Monterroso Juárez; Ota Kulhánek; Stefan Wiemer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; b-value; seismic hazard; Monte Carlo; seismic quiescence; Central America; stress; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : The present thesis collects results of research applying theory and methods of statistical seismology to the seismicity of Central America, a region with a complex tectonic setting controlled by the interaction of four major plates, namely the Caribbean, Cocos, Nazca and North American plates.Three different earthquake catalogues were used for studies focused on stress in a tectonic volume, seismic hazard maps and seismicity patterns (precursors), covering the region 94ºW to 81ºW and 5ºN to 20ºN. 4. 4. Investigating the activation and regulation of the proteasome : an essential proteolytic complex

    Author : Patrick Masson; Patrick Young; Marcus Groettrup; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Proteasome; PA28gamma; Transcriptional regulation; Drosophila; 26S; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The proteasome is a major non-lysosomal proteolytic complex present in eukaryotic cells and has a central role in regulating many protein levels. The complex has been shown to participate in various intracellular pathways including cell cycle regulation or quality control of newly synthesized proteins and many other key pathways. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development of competence in biochemical experimental work : Assessment of complex learning at university level

    Author : Christina Bergendahl; Lena Tibell; Lisbeth Lundahl; Lars-Owe Dahlgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Teaching; experimental work; laboratory based project work; open experiments; biochemistry; life science; university level; action research; course design; aims and objectives; assessment; formative assessment; competence; complex learning; Didaktik; Subject didactics; Ämnesdidaktik; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Biochemistry is part of life science: a fast developing multidisciplinary area. The overall aims of this thesis and the work underlying it were to find ways in which to develop competence in biochemistry at university level and to assess complex learning. A particular interest was the development of experimental work as a means to promote learning. READ MORE
