  1. 1. DNA Electrophoresis: Optical Probing and Microscopic Imaging to Understand Separation Mechanisms

    Author : Anette Larsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; optical probing; YOYO; polarized light spectroscopy; DNA electrophoresis; DAPI; binding modes; helix alignment; fluorescence microscopy;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to combine spectroscopic, mobility, and fluorescence microscopy studies to elucidate the mechanisms behind DNA electrophoresis, a method to separate DNA molecules according to size. The microscopy studies require staining of the DNA with a fluorescent dye. READ MORE

  2. 2. Naphthoxylosides – Probing the β4GalT7 active site

    Author : Anna Siegbahn; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Proteoglycans (PGs) is a class of highly anionic macromolecules that consist of one or more linear polysaccharide chains (glycosaminoglycans, GAGs) covalently attached to a core protein. The biological functions of PGs are mainly due to the interactions of GAG chains with various protein ligands and regulatory factors, such as cytokines and growth factors. READ MORE

  3. 3. Probing Biomolecular Recognition at the Single Molecule Level

    Author : Anders Gunnarsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cell membrane; TIRFM; liposome; time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry; membrane receptor; single molecule; TOF-SIMS; molecular recognition; DNA; barcode; total internal reflection; multiplexing;

    Abstract : Specific recognition between biomolecular partners contributes to a multitude of biochemical signaling within and between cells. The aim of this work has been to investigate the possibility to probe biomolecular recognition reactions at the smallest possible scale, the single molecule level. READ MORE

  4. 4. Influence of carbides and nitrides on corrosion initiation of advanced alloys : A local probing study

    Author : Eleonora Bettini; Jinshan Pan; Thomas Ladwein; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; carbides; nitrides; microstructure; CoCrMo alloys; duplex stainless steels; localized corrosion; transpassive dissoluti on; elemental depletion; AFM; TEM; SEM.;

    Abstract : Advanced alloys often present precipitated carbides and nitrides in their microstructure following exposure to elevated temperatures. These secondary phases are usually undesirable, because potentially deleterious for the corrosion and mechanical performances of the material. READ MORE

  5. 5. DNA Electrophoresis in Polymer Solutions. Separation Mechanisms studied by Fluorescence and Linear Dichroism Spectroscopy

    Author : Christina Carlsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mutation detection; orientation; YOYO; DNA electrophoresis; polarized light spectroscopy; optical probing; polymer solutions; fluorescence microscopy; PNA; binding modes;

    Abstract : Capillary electrophoresis of DNA in polymer solutions is a promising technique for separation of DNA molecules according to size. The primary aim of the work presented in this thesis was to get a better understanding of the electrophoretic separation mechanism in these media by studying the DNA migration behavior during electrophoresis in both entangled and non-entangled polymer solutions using linear dichroism spectroscopy and fluorescence video microscopy.
