1. Mechanical and Environmental Durability of High Performance Bio-based Composites
Abstract : This study is an initial step within the on-going project on development of high performance bio-based composites with improved mechanical (fatigue) and environmental (elevated humidity and temperature) durability. In the presented thesis the performance of cellulosic fibers (flax and regenerated cellulose), bio-based resins (Tribest, EpoBioX, Palapreg, and Envirez) and their composites under exposure to elevated humidity has been studied. 2. Swallowing dysfunction among older people in short-term care : prevalence, effect of intervention, and risk of mortality
Abstract : Objectives: Swallowing dysfunction (dysphagia) is a common, but often neglected condition among geriatric patients that can cause severe complications such as malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia and death. The aims of this thesis were to (i) describe the study design and method of the multidisciplinary and multicenter project SOFIA (Swallowing function, Oral health, and Food Intake in old Age), (ii) study the prevalence of and the relationship between swallowing dysfunction and risk of undernutrition among older individuals in short-term care, (iii) study the effect of oral neuromuscular training on swallowing dysfunction among older individuals, and (iv) to investigate the association between poor oral health, swallowing dysfunction and mortality. 3. Towards application of service oriented architecture in wireless sensor networks
Abstract : Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are a foreseeable source of innovation in many fields and the number of WSN deployments is expected to grow rapidly in the near future. One of the key challenges in designing, implementing, deploying and maintaining complex systems that use WSNs is provisioning and integration of sensor data with existing communication infrastructures. 4. SOD1 misfolding and aggregation in ALS : in the light of conformation-specific antibodies
Abstract : Mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene are linked to the progressive neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS-associated mutations affect the stability of the SOD1 protein and promote its unfolding. As a consequence, disordered SOD1 species can misfold and accumulate into insoluble aggregates. READ MORE

5. Development and Validation of a Numerical Tool for the Aeromechanical Design of Turbomachinery
Abstract : In aeromechanical design one of the major rules is to operate under High Cyclic Fatigue (HCF) margins and away from flutter. The level of dynamic excitations and risk of HCF can be estimated by performing forced response analyses from blade row interaction forces or Low Engine Order (LEO) excitation mechanisms. READ MORE
