  1. 1. Long-term follow-up in children born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia

    Author : Elin Öst; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a developmental defect which occurs in approximately 1 per 3000 births. The incomplete development of the diaphragm early in gestation allows abdominal viscera to herniate into the thoracic cavity. The malformation differs in size and can occur on either one or both sides, but most commonly on the left. READ MORE

  2. 2. School-age outcomes of children born at the limit of viability : a Swedish national prospective follow-up study at 10 to 12 years

    Author : Aijaz Farooqi; Serenius Fredrik; Hägglöf Bruno; Neil Marlow; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Background/Aim: During the past two decades, major advances in maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, and the development of regionalized perinatal care have resulted in dramatic increases in survival rates, by more than 60%, of extremely immature (EI) infants born at less than 26 completed weeks of gestation, creating a new infant population. Studies of school-age outcomes in children with an extremely low birth weight of < 1000 g, born in the1980s, indicated that these children had a substantially high prevalence of low-severity neuropsychological deficits, behavioral problems, and difficulties at school. 4. 4. Register-based studies of infertility and the use of assisted reproductive techniques : possibilities and challenges

    Author : Chen Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Abstract : The implementation of assisted reproductive techniques (ART) has enabled over 10 million births in the past 45 years. Concern for excess risks of adverse birth outcomes has largely, but not entirely, been mitigated by practice recommendations for single embryo transfer. READ MORE

  5. 5. The development of the human immune system during the first five years of life

    Author : Axel Olin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Systems immunology is a scientific field combining high-throughput analytic technologies and integrative data analysis to study the immune system from a holistic perspective. As the immune system is a complex integrated network of cells and proteins interacting in order to produce higher-level emergent behavior, the more traditional approach to immunological research is not fully capable of adequately describing these interactions.
