  1. 1. Cholesterol in T cells : homeostasis, plasma membrane organization and signaling

    Author : Saleemulla Mahammad; Ingela Parmryd; Thomas Harder; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plasma membrane; T cells; Cholesterol; Lipid rafts; Membrane organization; Cholesterol homeostasis; cholesteryl esters; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Cell Biology; cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells contains cholesterol and glycosphingolipids enriched nanodomains known as lipid rafts; which are believed to exist in a liquid ordered (lo) state. Methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MBCD) is used to deplete cellular cholesterol and a widespread assumption is that MBCD preferentially targets cholesterol in lipid rafts. READ MORE

  2. 2. Esterification of long-chain fatty acids to cholesterol and ethanol : role of acyltransferases and carboxylesterases

    Author : Margareta A Diczfalusy; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to investigate esterification of long-chain fatty acids to cholesterol and ethanol. The esterification products, cholesteryl esters and ethyl esters, may under certain circumstances accumulate in some cell types and tissues and cause pathological changes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hormone-Sensitive Lipase, new roles for an old enzyme

    Author : Ola Hansson; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diabetes; Vitamin A; Inflammation; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Medicin människa och djur ; Metabolism; Hormone-Sensitive Lipase; Proteomics; Obesity; White adipose tissue; Skeletal muscle;

    Abstract : Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) has a wide tissue distribution with the highest expression found in white adipose tissue (WAT). HSL also has a unique ability to hydrolyze a large panel of substrates including acylglycerols, cholesteryl esters and retinyl esters. HSL is potentially a new drug target for the treatment of obesity and type II diabetes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Assessing carotid plaque structure

    Author : Isabel Goncalves; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Modified LDL; Antibodies; Lipids; AP-1; Cellularity; Extracellular Matrix; Calcification; Elastin; Stroke; Gray-Scale Median; Echogenicity; Ultrasound; Atherosclerosis; Carotid Plaque;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death and disability in the western world. Its clinical complications include acute myocardial infarction, sudden death and stroke. Thirty to 40 % of all ischemic strokes are caused by a carotid stenosis. READ MORE

  5. 5. Turnover of chylomicrons in the rat

    Author : Magnus Hultin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Mechanisms involved in the clearance of chylomicrons and aspects of the interactions at the vascular endothelium were studied in the rat.The poly-anion heparin, known to release lipoprotein lipase (LPL) from the vascular endothelium, enhanced the clearance of chylomicrons. READ MORE
