  1. 1. Communication breakdown - synaptic dysfunction in Huntington's disease

    Author : Ruben Smith; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurodegeneration; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; cholinergic neuron; exocytosis; transmitter release; intracellular transport; insulin; Huntington s disease; synapse; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG-triplet expansion in the gene encoding the protein huntingtin. The disease typically starts in mid-life and progresses for 15-20 years. To date no effective treatment is available for curing the disease. HD primarily affects the striatum, cerebral cortex and hypothalamus. READ MORE

  2. 2. Anatomical, neurochemical and behavioural consequences of immunotoxin lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic system

    Author : Giampiero Leanza; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural transplantation; reinnervation; axon growth; functional sparing; memory; learning; cortex; hippocampus; immunolesion; acetylcholine; basal forebrain; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The cholinergic hypothesis of geriatric memory dysfunction suggests that the learning and memory deficits representing the cardinal symptoms of dementia in the aged and in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease may be attributable to a decline in the function of the cholinergic projection systems of the basal forebrain. Although many studies have addressed the issue of a causal relationship between cholinergic hypofunction and cognitive disturbance, analyses of the functional role of the basal forebrain cholinergic neuronal systems in the brain have so far been hampered by the lack of an efficient and specific cholinergic neurotoxin. 3. 3. Regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors : molecular aspects and functional implications

    Author : Tuija Salin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : neurotrophin; nerve growth factor; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; neurotrophin-3; neurotrophin-4; glia; gliosis; neuron; tyrosine kinase receptor; transgenic; null mutation; gene; exon; intron; mRNA;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to study the regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors in a functional aspect. The studies included analysis of neuronal and glial neurotrophin gene expression, that was investigated by using molecular biological techniques. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mechanisms of cell type-specific gene transcription : studies on the choline acetyltransferase gene

    Author : Peter Lönnerberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) is the enzyme synthesizing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Previous studies from our laboratory on the regulation of the cholinergic phenotype have suggested the presence of regulatory elements in the ChAT gene controlling accurate time- and cell-specific expression. 5. 5. The galanin type 2 receptor: molecular biological, histochemical and electrophysiological studies

    Author : Kang Zheng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Galanin;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, the aim was to probe the distribution and functions of galanin type 2 receptor (GalR2) in the rodent brain. In order to overcome the lack of a reliable antibody to localize GalR2 by immunohistochemistry, we generated a construct which expresses GalR2 tagged with enhanced GFP (EGFP). READ MORE
