  1. 16. Vessel wall integrity : influence of genetics and flow

    Author : Hanna Björck; Toste Länne; Per Eriksson; Sverker Jern; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the major cause of death worldwide. Underlying causes, such as atherosclerosis and hypertension, are associated with remodeling of the vessel wall ultimately leading to loss of structural integrity. There are a number of factors that can influence vascular remodeling and hence structural integrity. READ MORE

  2. 17. Genetic causes and molecular mechanisms underlying rare metabolic bone diseases

    Author : Alice Costantini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The skeletal system provides support for the body, enables movement and protects inner organs. Moreover, it supplies blood cells and acts as a reservoir for minerals and fat. Several external factors, including nutrition and long-term illness, influence bone health but genetic factors also play an important role. READ MORE

  3. 18. MEMS Interfaces for Bioanalysis Systems

    Author : Thomas Frisk; Göran Stemme; Andreas Hierlemann; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microfluidic interfacing; microfluidics; µTAS; sample transfer; biosensor; electronic nose; surface tension; quartz crystal microbalance; QCM; narcotics detection; Electronic measurement and instrumentation; Elektronisk mät- och apparatteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with various aspects of using open microfluidic interfaces. Three specific areas of application are studied. The first is air-to-liquid interfacing in biosensors with possibilities for component integration. A micromachined interface for airborne sample-to-liquid and droplet-to-liquid adsorption is discussed. READ MORE

  4. 19. Crystallization in Constrained Polymer Structures : Approaching the Unsolved Problems in Polymer Crystallization

    Author : Eugenia Núñez; Ulf W. Gedde; Bernard Lotz; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Crystallization; Constrained structures; poly ε–caprolactone ; poly ethylene oxybenzoate .; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : The knowledge regarding certain issues in polymer crystallization e.g. the possible existence of short–lived mesophases remains inconclusive due to experimental limitations. Polymers undergo chain folding upon crystallization, which introduces some complications that are not found in crystallization of low molar mass materials. READ MORE

  5. 20. Methods for Processing and Analysis of Biomedical TEM Images

    Author : Amit Suveer; Ida-Maria Sintorn; Carolina Wählby; Natasa Sladoje; Jari Hyttinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; image analysis; image processing; deep learning; transmission electron microscopy; denoising; super-resolution reconstruction; registration; detection; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) has the high resolving capability and high clinical significance; however, the current manual diagnostic procedure using TEM is complicated and time-consuming, requiring rarely available expertise for analyzing TEM images of the biological specimen. This thesis addresses the bottlenecks of TEM-based analysis by proposing image analysis methods to automate and improve critical time-consuming steps of currently manual diagnostic procedures.
