1. Wild plants can improve their rhizosphere chemistry in acid soils
Abstract : Growth conditions on acid soils may be hampered by low nutrient availability and phytotoxic Al (aluminium) concentrations. In this thesis I present my studies on adaptation mechanisms of wild plants to acid soils in the close root environment, the rhizosphere. READ MORE

2. Effects of Citric Acid on Starch-Based Barrier Coatings
Abstract : With growing environmental concerns, efforts are made to replace petroleum based products with renewable alternatives. This is particularly evident in the packaging industry, where replacing synthetic polymers with renewable materials is of considerable interest. READ MORE

3. Microbial Production of Bio-Based Chemicals: A Biorefinery Perspective
Abstract : A shift from fossil- to renewable biomass feedstock for the emerging bio-based economy requires the development and adoption of new sustainable technologies that are more suited for transformation of biomass components to chemicals, materials and energy. This thesis presents investigations on the development of processes based on industrial biotechnology as a key element for the production of chemicals from agro-/industrial by-products. READ MORE

4. Enantioselective synthesis of citric acid analogues
Abstract : The enantioselective synthesis of (1S,2S)- and (1R,2S)- fluorocitric acid is described. Toxic fluorocitric acid formed enzymaticly from fluoroacetic acid has the 1R,2R configuration. The enzyme citrate (si)-synthase catalyzes the formation of all four isomers of fluorocitric acid. READ MORE

5. Equilibrium studies of ternary aluminium(III) hydroxo complexes with ligands related to conditions in natural waters
Abstract : The thesis is a summary and discussion of eight papers. During the last decades, precipitation has become increasingly acidic due to the extensive use of fossil fuels. In areas of poorly buffered bedrocks, e.g. READ MORE
