2. A sustainable home? Reconceptualizing home in a low-impact society
Abstract : This thesis addresses the environmental and socio-economic impact of modern ways of living, focusing on home-related concepts and practices for transitions to a less environmentally harmful and more socially just society. Exploring diverse conceptualizations of a sustainable home, the aim is to broaden discourses on less resource-intensive ways of living and residing. READ MORE

3. Sound Insulation at Low Frequencies
Abstract : The airborne sound transmission through building partitions at low frequencies was studied. The definition of the sound reduction index as a measure of sound insulation has been examined by means of extensive numerical simulations in 3-D domains. The simulations were based on the wave theoretical acoustics. READ MORE

4. Low-Carbon City Initiatives in China : Planning Approaches, Dilemmas and Opportunities
Abstract : In order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, tackle climate change and move toward sustainable development, the central government in China has proposed low-carbon city development as the national strategy and relevant initiatives have been taken by local governments. This thesis analyses current low-carbon city programmes and planning approaches in China, identifies limitations and proposes a metabolic approach that could be used to account for physical resources, monitor GHG emissions and involve stakeholders in the planning process. 5. Early Stage Architectural Design Practice Perspectives on Life Cycle Building Performance Assessment
Abstract : Architectural practitioners can avoid negative social and environmental impacts of new construction by making decisions supported by impact quantification during design processes. However, most software tools developed for such quantification see little use in practice, especially in early design stages when decisions have the greatest influence. READ MORE
