1. Cleft Size and Maxillary Arch Dimensions in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate and Cleft Palate
Abstract : The wide variation in infant maxillary morphology and cleft size of children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and isolated cleft palate (CP) raise concerns about their possible influences on treatment outcome. The studies in this thesis aimed to investigate the relation between cleft size in infancy and crossbite at 5 years of age (Paper I); the impact of primary surgery on cleft size and maxillary arch dimensions from infancy to 5 years of age (Paper II); associations between cleft size, maxillary arch dimensions and facial growth in both UCLP and CP children (Paper III); and, to evaluate the relation between infant cleft size and nasal airway size and function in adults treated for UCLP (Paper IV). 2. Reconstruction of the alveolar process in cleft patients
Abstract : Background. The treatment of patients born with cleft lip and palate has been gradually modified over the years as the surgical procedures have developed and improved. Multidisciplinary team care has evolved and provided improved care with enhanced results. Clefts in the alveolus can be reconstructed by alveolar bone grafting or by periosteoplasty. READ MORE

3. Molecular and Cellular Control of Palate Development in the Mouse
Abstract : The formation of a definitive secondary palate in mammals is a multistep process that comprises growth, elevation, contact and fusion of the two palatal shelves. Disruption at any step generates cleft palate, a major congenital birth defect. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms governing normal palate development. READ MORE

4. Speech and velopharyngeal function in patients with hypernasality : an investigation utilizing listener judgments, instrumental analysis (NORAM), multiview videoradiography and nasopharyngoscopy
Abstract : This investigation evaluated how velopharyngeal function and speech deficiencies related to velo pharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) were influenced by a) type of cleft, b) site and size of oronasal fistulas and c) pharyngeal flaps. In addition, the accelerometric device, NORAM was evaluated. READ MORE

5. FoxF genes in development and disease
Abstract : Forkhead transcription factors of the FoxF group are important during embryonic de-velopment, and mutation of either of the members, Foxf1 and Foxf2, has fatal conse-quences. In this thesis, I present our recent findings about the mechanism of action of FoxF genes in development and disease. READ MORE
