  1. 1. Recurrent Streptococcal Pharyngotonsillitis Studies on etiology and treatment

    Author : Arne Orrling; Lund näs- och halssjukdomar Öron-; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; auditive system and speech; Otorinolaryngologi; Infektioner; Otorhinolaryngology; Infections; Clindamycin.; Penicillin tolerance; Tonsillar surface fluid; treatment failure; Group A streptococci; hörsel- och talorganen; audiologi; audiology; Recurrent streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis;

    Abstract : In acute pharyngotonsillitis group A streptococci (GAS) is the etiological agent in 30-50% of cases. Phenoxymethylpenicillin (pcV) is the drug of choice in Sweden. However, the failure rate is as high as 5-25% and further pcV treatment is followed by still higher failure rates. The background of failures remains largely elusive. READ MORE

  2. 2. Bacterial Vaginosis : Diagnosis, Prevalence, and Treatment

    Author : Katarina Eriksson; Per-Göran Larsson; Urban Forsum; Ann-Sofie Adolfsson; Inger Mattsby-Baltzer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Bacterial vaginosis; prevalence; diagnosis; PAP-smear; probiotic treatment; clindamycin; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by a foul smelling vaginal discharge, loss or reduction of the normal vaginal Lactobacilli, and overgrowth of other anaerobic bacteria. Thus, it presents a formidable problem for clinicians as well as microbiologists researching its etiology, clinical course, treatment, and epidemiology. READ MORE

  3. 3. Antibiotic-induced Bacterial Toxin Release – Inhibition by Protein Synthesis Inhibitors

    Author : Gunilla Hjerdt-Goscinski; Jan Sjölin; Monica Lundholm; Inga Odenholt; Ingrid Nilsson-Ehle; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Toxic products, such as endotoxin from the gram-negative and exotoxin from the gram-positive bacteria, are the most important initiators of the inflammatory host response in sepsis. In addition to antibacterial treatment, numerous attempts have been made to interfere with the exaggerated proinflammatory cascade initiated by the toxins. READ MORE

  4. 4. Incidence, emergence, persistence and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance : in clinical isolates and normal microbiota

    Author : Sonja Löfmark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The increasing resistance rate to antimicrobial agents is of global concern and needs to be readily addressed. Options for successful treatments of infectious diseases are becoming limited due to the spread of resistant strains and resistance genes in the clinic and in the community. READ MORE

  5. 5. Staphylococcal induced inflammatory response in human monocytes: Analysis of factors involved

    Abstract : Purified bacterial cell wall components peptidoglycan and teichoic acid were isolated from staphylococcal species S. aureus and/or S. epidermidis and tested for their ability to induce cytokine release from plastic-adherent human monocytes. READ MORE
