  1. 1. Functional Aspects of Peripheral and Spinal Cord Neurons Involved in Itch and Pain

    Author : Bejan Aresh; Malin Lagerström; Klas Kullander; Martin Schmelz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : mGluR7; anaphylaxis; Grpr; Penk; Pdyn; Cre line; BAC cloning; spinal cord; transgenic line; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : We have investigated the role of the metabotropic glutamate receptor 7 (mGluR7) and the gastrin releasing peptide receptor (Grpr) population that are involved at different levels of itch transmission. We found that mGuR7 deficient mice displayed an anaphylaxis-like behavior when provoked with histamine. READ MORE

  2. 2. Virulence determinants of the insect pathogen Bacillus thuringiensis; : Molecular characterization of flagellins and the virulence protease immune inhibitor A

    Author : Ann Lövgren; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a motile, Gram positive, rod-shaped and spore-forminginsect pathogenic bacterium found on plants and in soil. The main insecticidal activityresides in a proteinacious crystal inclusion body (the S-endotoxin), but also the sporesare important for lethality. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on global regulators involved in virulence gene expression in Staphylococcus aureus

    Author : Anna Kanth; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of skin, soft tissue, respiratory and endovascular diseases. Staphylococcal pathogenicity depends on the coordinated action of at least 40 different virulence factors, including cytolytic toxins (hla, hlb, luk) enterotoxins (ent), several proteases (ssp, aur, scp) and a large number of cell wall-associated proteins, such as protein A (spa), and fibronectin binding protein (FnBPs). 4. 4. FOXC2 and CAPN10 as candidate genes for obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

    Author : Emma A Nilsson; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomedicinska vetenskaper; Biomedical sciences; Type 2 diabetes; Genetics; Obesity;

    Abstract : The worldwide prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes is increasing rapidly. Both disorders depend on genetic and environmental factors. The studies included in this thesis investigated the possible association of the FOXC2 and CAPN10 genes with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and related phenotypes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies of proteins in heme and iron metabolism

    Author : Vijole Dzikaite; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Iron; Heme; IRE IRP; Liver; eALAS; HFE;

    Abstract : One aim of the study was to investigate the regulation of the murine erythroid isoform of aminolevulinate synthase (eALAS) protein involved in heme synthesis. Another aim was to characterize the structure of the rat hemochromatosis gene (HFE) gene and its expression in conjunction with other genes involved in the regulation of iron homeostasis during inflammation and iron overload in the rat liver.
