  1. 1. The aging brain and changes in cognitive performance : Findings from morphometry and quantitative susceptibility mapping of iron

    Author : Ninni Persson; Håkan Fischser; Kristine B. Walhovd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; brain aging; volumes; ndividual differences; QSM; cognitive aging; iron; episodic memory; fluid-; crystalized abilities; sex differences; gender differences; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Brain aging is a heterogeneous phenomenon, and this thesis illustrates how the course of aging can vary within individuals over time and between individuals as a function of age, sex, and genetic variability. We used two contrasts from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), namely spin-lattice T1-weighted imaging, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) from gradient-echo images, to picture the aging brain, by means of morphometric measures and brain-iron concentrations. 2. 2. Using Mobile Health Technology to Support Health-related Quality of Life : From the Perspective of Older Adults with Cognitive Impairment

    Author : Line Christiansen; Lisa Skär; Johan Sanmartin Berglund; Peter Anderberg; Staffan Karlsson; Blekinge Tekniska Högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aging; Cognitive Impairment; Cohort Studies; Dementia; Gerontechnology; Health-related Quality of Life; Independent Living; Mental Health; Mobile Health; Phenomenography; Quality of Life; Telemedicine; Tillämpad hälsoteknik; Applied Health Technology;

    Abstract : The prevalence of cognitive impairment and illness increases with age. For older adults, maintaining or improving health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the early stages of cognitive impairment is important to prevent consequences related to the progression of the condition. 3. 3. The architecture of the aging brain : functional reorganization, structural changes, and the role of dopamine receptors

    Author : Robin Pedersen; Alireza Salami; Anna Rieckmann; Anders Wåhlin; Lars Nyberg; Roser Sala-Llonch; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; brain architecture; functional connectivity; dopamine; aging; cognition; memory; functional magnetic resonance imaging; positron emission tomography; graph theory; Laplacian eigenmapping; gradient;

    Abstract : Aging is associated with reorganization of functional brain architecture, potentially leading tocognitive decline in older age. However, the mechanisms responsible for alterations in functionalbrain architecture remain poorly understood. READ MORE

  4. 4. On Retirement and Cognitive Aging from a Life-Span Perspective

    Author : Linn Elena Zulka; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; cognitive aging; retirement transition; leisure activity engagement; work demands; personality; life satisfaction; initial IQ; social contacts;

    Abstract : Retirement is a major life event potentially affecting domains such as cognitive functioning and well-being. The main aim of this thesis was to assess whether retirement influences cognitive functioning and how inter- and intra-individual differences in psychological and lifestyle factors moderate the association. 5. 5. Lifestyle, cognitive aging, and brain correlates

    Author : Ylva Köhncke; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Inter-individual differences in level and rate of cognitive decline typically seen in aging have been linked to inter-individual differences in lifestyle factors such as leisure activities, including physical activity. The general aim of this thesis was to further our understanding of how and why leisure activity engagement is related to aging-related changes in cognitive performance. READ MORE
