  1. 16. Modern roles for an ancient system. Intracellular Complement in the regulation of β cell function

    Author : Ewelina Golec; Malmö Proteinkemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Complement system; Diabetes mellitus; Insulin secretion; CD59; C3; Isoforms; SNARE proteins;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characterised by defective insulin exocytosis from the pancreatic β cells, accompanied by insulin resistance. Reduced β cells mass is often seen in T2D individuals, caused by enhanced β cells apoptosis. It is now understood that several components drive β cells dysfunction and apoptosis. READ MORE

  2. 17. Complement in Autoimmunity - the importance of clearing waste

    Author : Jonatan Leffler; Malmö Proteinkemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; annexins; apoptosis; Complement system; neutrophil extracellular traps; systemic lupus erythematosus; C1q; factor H; histones;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease where improperly cleared apoptotic cells and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) induce an autoimmune response. Complement is crucial to prevent SLE by tailoring immune responses and opsonizing dead cells but may also induce inflammation and tissue damage once the disease is initiated. READ MORE

  3. 18. Recognition molecules of the complement system: C1q and mannan-binding lectin in autoimmunity and immune defence

    Author : Ulla Mårtensson; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; serologi; Immunologi; Immunology; serology; autoantibodies; collectins; complement; autoimmunity; Infections; Infektioner;

    Abstract : The C1 subcomponent C1q and the mannan-binding lectin (MBL) are recognition proteins of the complement system, and have similar structure. C1q binds to IgG and IgM and activates the classical pathway. MBL binds to carbohydrate structures and activates the lectin pathway. READ MORE

  4. 19. Clinical, epidemiological and immunological aspects of Lyme borreliosis with special focus on the role of the complement system

    Author : Anna J Henningsson; Jan Ernerudh; Pia Forsberg; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Bo-Eric Malmvall; Lars Hagberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lyme borreliosis; neuroborreliosis; clinical; epidemiology; inflammation; complement; cytokine; chemokine;

    Abstract : Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common vector-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. The infection is caused by spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, and it is transmitted to humans by ticks. READ MORE

  5. 20. Effects of Complement Opsonization of HIV on Dendritic Cells : and Implications for the Immune Response

    Author : Rada Ellegård; Marie Larsson; Jorma Hinkula; Johan D Söderholm; William Paxton; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HIV; dendritic cells; complement; innate immune response; TLR signaling; T cell activation; NK cells; inflammation; antiviral response; immune evasion;

    Abstract : Dendritic cells are key players during HIV pathogenesis, and shape both the immediate immune response at the site of infection as well as directing the adaptive immune response against the virus. HIV has developed a plethora of immune evasion mechanisms that hijack dendritic cell functions, suppressing their ability to mount an accurate immune response and exploiting them for efficient viral transfer to target T cells.
