  1. 1. On spinal mechanisms for reflex control in man : modulation of Ia-afferent excitation with changes in muscle length, activation level and fatigue

    Author : Maria M. Nordlund; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Electromyography; eccentric; concentric; presynaptic inhibition; H-reflex; central fatigue; twitch interpolation; muscle spindle; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology; Electromyography; eccentric; concentric; presynaptic inhibition; H-reflex; central fatigue; twitch interpolation; muscle spindle;

    Abstract : To control muscle force, neural activation has to take alterations in muscle mechanics into account. This thesis assesses modulations in excitatory efficacy of Ia-afferents during muscle length changes at different levels of voluntary activation and during fatigue. READ MORE

  2. 2. Chronic Tennis Elbow : Aspects on Pathogenesis and Treatment in a Soft Tissue Pain Condition

    Author : Magnus Peterson; Kurt Svärdsudd; Margaretha Eriksson; Harald Breivik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : tennis elbow; pain; chronic; soft tissue; imaging; PET; RCT; survey; treatment; exercise; eccentric; concentric; epicondylosis; epicondylitis; tendinosis; tendinitis;

    Abstract : Objectives: To study the treatment practice of chronic tennis elbow (TE) among general practitioners (GPs) and physiotherapists (PTs), the effects of a simple, graded home exercise regime versus expectation, the effects of eccentric versus concentric exercise, and the involvement of the substance P – NK1 receptor system in the peripheral, painful tissue of chronic TE patients by positron emission tomography (PET). Materials and methods: A postal survey regarding therapeutic methods used in patients with chronic TE was sent to 129 GPs and 77 PTs, 81 subjects with chronic TE were randomly and blindly assigned to either an exercise group or a wait list group, 120 subjects were randomly assigned to either eccentric or concentric exercise and ten subjects were examined by PET and the NK1 specific radioligand [11C]GR205171. 3. 3. Biomechanical analyses of flywheel resistance exercise : From a space- and ground-based perspective

    Author : Maria Sjöberg; Ola Eiken; Elena Gutierrez-Farewik; Hans E Berg; Patrik Sundblad; Loren FZ Chiu; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; AnyBody Modeling System; concentric; eccentric; eccentric overload; inverse dynamics; knee extensors; microgravity; musculoskeletal deconditioning; net-joint moment; AnyBody Modeling System; excentrisk; excentrisk överbelastning; invers dynamik; knäextensorer; koncentrisk; ledmoment; mikrogravitation; muskuloskeletal nedbrytning; Teknik och hälsa; Technology and Health;

    Abstract : Astronauts suffer degradation of postural muscles and weight-bearing bones during long-duration spaceflight. Resistance exercise is used as a primary countermeasure against these degradations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modelling of muscular force induced by non-isometric contraction

    Author : Natalia Kosterina; Anders Eriksson; Michael Günther; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Skeletal muscle; Muscular force; Concentric contractions; Eccentric con- tractions; History effect; Force modification; Muscle model; Musculoskeletal model;

    Abstract : The main objective of the study was to investigate and simulate skeletal muscleforce production during and after isometric contractions, active muscle lengtheningand active muscle shortening. The motivation behind this work was to improve thedominant model of muscle force generation based on the theories of Hill from 1938. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biomechanical and neural aspects of eccentric and concentric muscle performance in stroke subjects : Implications for resistance training

    Author : Mattias Hedlund; Britta Lindström; Peter Sojka; Ronnie Lundström; Carl-Johan Olsson; Jan Lexell; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fMRI; Isokinetic; Motor imagery; Muscular strength; Resistance training; Neurological rehabilitation;

    Abstract : Muscle weakness is one of the major causes of post-stroke disability. Stroke rehabilitation programs now often incorporate the same type of resistance training that is used for healthy subjects; however, the training effects induced from these training strategies are often limited for stroke patients.
