16. Acute Mastoiditis in Children – A National Study in Sweden
Abstract : One of the greatest threats to society today is the development of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. It is commonly accepted that this is mainly due to the use of antibiotics. Acute otitis media (AOM) is responsible for the highest number of antibiotic prescriptions to children although it is in most cases a self-limiting disease. READ MORE

17. Exploring nanosystems for biomedical applications focusing on photodynamic therapy and drug delivery
Abstract : The increasing incidences of cancer and related deaths call for the development of new and improved treatment modalities. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) today is an alternative to conventional treatments, but has limitations. This thesis explores different nanosystems with aim to improve PDT focusing on spectroscopic and ex vivo studies. READ MORE

18. Partitioned methods for time-dependent thermal fluid-structure interaction
Abstract : The efficient simulation of thermal interaction between fluids and structures is crucial in the design of many industrial products, e.g. turbine blades or rocket nozzles. READ MORE

19. Carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : role of human glutathione transferases in conjugate formation and DNA protection
Abstract : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread mutagenic and carcinogenic environmental pollutants, which requires metabolic activation to electrophilic intermediates and subsequent covalent binding to critical targets in DNA to elicit their biological activity. Bay- and fjord region diol epoxides (DEs) have been identified as the ultimate mutagenic and carcinogenic metabolites of PAHs. READ MORE

20. On Methods for Solving Symmetric Systems of Linear Equations Arising in Optimization
Abstract : In this thesis we present research on mathematical properties of methods for solv- ing symmetric systems of linear equations that arise in various optimization problem formulations and in methods for solving such problems. In the first and third paper (Paper A and Paper C), we consider the connection be- tween the method of conjugate gradients and quasi-Newton methods on strictly convex quadratic optimization problems or equivalently on a symmetric system of linear equa- tions with a positive definite matrix.
