  1. 1. Nitric oxide in experimental sepsis

    Author : Peter Dahm; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intensive care; Nitric oxide; Sepsis; NO inhalation; Endotoxin; Acute lung injury; ARDS; Nitric oxide synthase; L-NMMA; L-NAME; Anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology; Pigs; intensivvård;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is important in the control of blood pressure and organ perfusion. In septic shock, NO produced by inducible NO-synthase (NOS) has been claimed to mediate pathological vasodilation and cell injury, while NO produced by constitutive NOS may be protective in counteracting hypoperfusion and organ injury. 2. 2. Islet constitutive nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide production. Modulatory effects on insulin and glucagon secretion

    Author : Björn Åkesson; Allmänmedicin och klinisk epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacognosy; Pharmacological sciences; mouse; carbachol; muscarinic agonist; cyclic nucleotides; calcium-fluxes; NOS-inhibitors; in vitro and in vivo; insulin and glucagon secretion; Nitric oxide NO ; constitutive nitric oxide synthase cNOS ; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the transduction signalling of insulin and glucagon release by stimulating or inhibiting islet endogenous NO-production as well as by using NO donors. Insulin release stimulated by L-arginine, the substrate for constitutive NO-synthase (cNOS)-catalyzed NO-production, was increased by the selective NOS-inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and suppressed by the intracellular NO donor hydroxylamine. 3. 3. Nitric Oxide Synthase in Pancreatic Islets During Trauma and Parenteral Feeding

    Author : Saleem Qader; Islet cell physiology; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; Gastroenterologi; Gastro-enterology; Pancreatitis; Ghrelin; TPN; cNOS; iNOS; PACAP; VIP; cAMP; Pancreatic islets; Insulin secretion;

    Abstract : The influence of trauma (acute pancreatitis) or total parenteral nutrition (TPN) on pancreatic islet hormone secretion in relation to islet expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was investigated. Acute pancreatitis resulted in an impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) which was found to be parallelled by a marked expression of iNOS and an exaggerated NO production in the pancreatic islets. 4. 4. Nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO): A novel class of messenger molecules regulating insulin and glucagon secretion

    Author : Ragnar Henningsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; carbon monoxide CO ; nitric oxide NO ; Nitric oxide synthase NOS ; Insulin and glucagon secretion; cyclic nucleotides; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi; Heme oxygenase HO ;

    Abstract : During the last decade it has been shown that nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) are produced in our own body, and that they constitute a novel class of messenger molecules. In 1992 a constitutive NO-producing NO-synthase (cNOS) was found in the islets of Langerhans, and in 1997 we could show for the first time that the islets also contained a CO-producing constitutive heme oxygenase (HO-2). 5. 5. Studies on effects of antioxidants on arterial thrombosis and endothelial cell injury : With special reference to Tocopherols and ApoA1 Milano

    Author : Dayuan Li; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; tocopherols; apoA1 Milano; platelet aggregation; thrombosis; superoxide dismutase; nitric oxide synthase; endothelial cells; oxidized LDL; transcription factor; apoptosis; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; rättsmedicin; Forensic Medicine;

    Abstract : Coronary arterial endothelial injury and thrombosis are believed to be critical factors in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Experimental studies have provided evidence for au inverse relation between acute coronary events and antioxidant intake. READ MORE
