1. Digital lines, Sturmian words, and continued fractions
Abstract : In this thesis we present and solve selected problems arising from digital geometry and combinatorics on words. We consider digital straight lines and, equivalently, upper mechanical words with positive irrational slopes a... READ MORE

2. Multipoint Padé approximants used for piecewise rational interpolation and for interpolation to functions of Stieltjes' type
Abstract : A multipoint Padë approximant, R, to a function of Stieltjes1 type is determined. The function R has numerator of degree n-l and denominator of degree n.The 2n interpolation points must belong to the region where f is analytic, and if one non-real point is amongst the interpolation points its complex-conjugated point must too. 3. Permutation Patterns, Continued Fractions, and a Group Determined by an Ordered Set
Abstract : We present six articles: In the first and second article we give the first few results on generalized pattern avoidance, focusing on patterns of type (1,2) or (2,1). There are twelve such patterns, and they fall into three classes with respect to being equidistributed. We use 1-23, 1-32, and 2-13 as representatives for these classes. READ MORE

4. Improving neonatal survival in East Africa Analysis of maternal service utilization, effectiveness of care and risk factors for neonatal mortality in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania
Abstract : Despite profound progress made in reducing neonatal mortality, it remains one of the major global health challenges. In 2019, the World Health Organization estimated that 2.4 million neonatal deaths occurred, accounting for over 45 percent of under-5 deaths worldwide. READ MORE

5. Cardiac Function and Aortic Valve Intervention : Echocardiographic Studies of Myocardial Recovery in Patients with Severe Aortic Valve Disease
Abstract : In patients with severe aortic valve disease, aortic valve intervention is performed when the risk for mortality or morbidity with conservative management is significantly increased. Left ventricular (LV) longitudinal motion decreases before conventional echocardiographic measures such as ejection fraction, are influenced in patients with severe aortic valve disease. READ MORE
