  1. 1. Trade-off between starvation and predation : Weight-watching in Yellowhammers

    Author : Ineke T. van der Veen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : In this thesis I show that captive yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) strategically adjusted their level of body mass and diurnal trajectory of mass increase to experimentally increased predation risk. During winter, small birds need large fat reserves to survive the night. Therefore, they build up fat reserves every day. READ MORE

  2. 2. Multiobjective Optimization for Safety and Reliability Trade-off : Applications on Early Phases of Aircraft Systems Design

    Author : Cristina Johansson; Johan Ölvander; Micael Derelöv; John Andrew; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES;

    Abstract : A strategic issue for any industrial company is to conceive safe and reliable systems while performing all systems’ intended functions at a minimum cost. System safety and reliability are fundamental to system design and involve a quantitative assessment prior to system development. READ MORE

  3. 3. Causes and consequences of blood parasite infections in birds

    Author : Martin Stjernman; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi; Parasitologi människa och djur ; Parasitology human and animal ; maternal transfer; stabilising selection; parasite resistance; parasites; trade-off; cost of reproduction; Ficedula hypoleuca; pied flycatcher; Haemoproteus; blue tit; Parus caeruleus;

    Abstract : Parasites are ubiquitous and can cause significant fitness reductions to their hosts. Therefore, selection for the evolution of host resistance should be strong. However, resistance may be costly and should be traded-off against other fitness related traits. READ MORE

  4. 4. Evolution of Plants : a mathematical perspective

    Author : Magnus Lindh; Åke Brännström; Jacob Johansson; Mats G Larson; Lennart Persson; Claus Rüffler; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; plants; mathematics; optimization; optimal control; adaptive dynamics; flowering; seasons; tree crown; drought; taproot; trade-off; strategy; trait; ESS; NPP; LAI; Red Queen; Mathematics; matematik;

    Abstract : The Earth harbors around 300 000 plant species. The rich and complex environment provided by plants is considered a key factor for the extraordinary diversity of the terrestrial fauna by, for example, providing food and shelter. READ MORE

  5. 5. Age-specific trade-offs in life-history evolution

    Author : Martyna K. Zwoinska; Alexei Maklakov; Marjo Saastamoinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; life history; trade-off; learning; aging; sex differences; dispersal; Caenorhabditis; Drosophila; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Trade-offs prevent selection from driving all fitness-enhancing traits towards values that would maximize fitness. Life-history trade-offs, such as the one between survival and reproduction are well-studied, yet trade-offs can also involve behavioural or cognitive traits. READ MORE
