  1. 1. Pharmacology and resistance mechanisms of nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase II interactive agents : studies on human leukemia cells with a focus on cross-resistance

    Author : Kourosh Lotfi; Rolf Larsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Nucleoside analogue; cross-resistance; multidrug resistance; deoxycytidine kinase; leukemia; anthracyclines; P-glycoprotein; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to elucidate mechanisms of action and resistance of clinically relevant nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase interactive agents in human leukemia cell lines and leukernia cells isolated from peripheral blood of leukemia patients. Interactions and cross-resistance patterns of these different cytotoxic drug families were also studied since these drugs are usually administrated in combination in the clinic. READ MORE

  2. 2. Expression of multidrug resistance genes and proteins and effect of selenite in anthracycline-resistant human tumor cell lines

    Author : Kerstin Jönsson Videsäter; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Multidrug resistance; cross-resistance profile; ATP-bioluminescence assay; pglycoprotein; MRP1; selenium; thioredoxin reductase; glutathione reductase.;

    Abstract : Treatment failure due to development of drug resistance is a serious complication in cancer treatment and the major cause of death in these patients. This thesis has focused on to gain knowledge about the mechanisms of multidrug resistance and to establish in vitro methods to characterize the resistant tumor cell phenotype. READ MORE

  3. 3. Drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Estonia

    Author : Annika Krüüner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Tuberculosis; Estonia; M. tuberculosis; drug resistance; MDR-TB; Beijing genotype; cross-resistance; kanamycin; amikacin; rrs mutations; 16S rRNA; exposure; nosocomial transmission; mycobacterial persistence; re-infection; DST; second-line drugs; Bactec; 460; DNA fingerprinting; spoligotyping;

    Abstract : Tuberculosis (TB) infection and disease patterns among different populations are extremely heterogeneous. This thesis explores mainly by microbiological methods the epidemiology of TB in Estonia. Through the work high rates of drug resistance were found. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interaction of cyclotides and bacteria : A study of the cyclotide action and the bacterial reaction

    Author : Sohaib Zafar Malik; Ulf Göransson; Dan Andersson; William Shafer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cyclotides; cycloviolacin O2; cycloviolacin O3; cycloviolacin O19; antimicrobial peptide resistance; Salmonella enterica; Eschericia coli; Viola odorata; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : The growing problem of antibiotic resistance and the lack of promising prospective antibiotics have forced us to search for new classes of antibiotics. Among the candidates to develop into future antibacterials are antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). READ MORE

  5. 5. Cytotoxic mechanisms of selenium in cancer

    Author : Eric Olm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Selenium is an essential trace element with a diverse number of functions in the body as part of multiple selenoproteins. Acknowledged for its cancer preventive properties in clinical trials, selenium has in recent years also evolved as a potential chemotherapeutic agent. READ MORE
