1. Alveolar macrophages and lung surfactant in the defense against Cryptococcus neoformans
Abstract : Cryptococcus neoformans causes disease mainly in immunosuppressed patients, especially those with AIDS, and on corticosteroids. The yeast is normally inhaled and the lung is the primary site of infection, where the alveolar macrophages (AM) provide a first line of host defense. READ MORE

2. Bark lesions and sensitivity to frost in beech and Norway spruce
Abstract : Strong temperature fluctuations and pathogen attacks can cause bark lesions, visible signs of wounds in the phloem and cambium. Pathogenic insects and fungi are able to invade lesions that have not healed, further increasing the damage. READ MORE

4. Synthesis of oligosaccharides related to the capsular polysaccharides of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 9 and of Cryptococcus neoformans
Abstract : In the present investigation, synthesis of oligosaccharides corresponding to structural elements present in the capsular polysaccharides of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Cryptococcus neoformans has been achieved. The first two sections describe the synthesis of spacer-equipped oligosaccharides corresponding to structures from the CPS of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 9N, 9A and 9L, the production of which involved synthetic challenges such as the construction of β-ManNAc and α-GlcA linkages. 5. Development of strategies for construction of thioglycoside building blocks corresponding to repeating triads of Cryptococcus neoformans GXM capsular polysaccharide
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the development of methods for synthesis of thioglycoside building blocks corresponding to the repeating units of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen. The building blocks are suitable for construction of large synthetic oligosaccharides related to the native CPS-structures which are to be used in biological studies in order to identify protective epitopes with the aim to develop a glycoconjugate vaccine against C.
