  2. 2. Theory of Crystal Fields and Magnetism of f-electron Systems

    Author : Massimiliano Colarieti Tosti; Olle Eriksson; Walter Temmerman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical physics; Crystal Field; Magnetism; Electronic Structure; Teoretisk fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : A parameter free approach for the calculation of the crystal field splitting of the lowest Russel-Saunders J-multiplet in f-electron systems has been developed and applied to selected compounds. The developed theory is applicable to general symmetries and is based on symmetry constrained density functional theory calculations in the local density or in the generalised gradient approximation. 3. 3. Nematic Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulators for Laser Beam Steering

    Author : Emil Hällstig; Mikael Lindgren; Lars Sjöqvist; William Crossland; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; spatial light modulator; liquid crystal; beam steering; tracking; phase modulation; fringing field; director distribution; finite-difference time-domain; polarization; temporal properties; Fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Laser beam control is important in many applications. Phase modulating spatial light modulators (SLMs) can be used to electronically alter the phase distribution of an optical wave-front and thus change the direction and shape of a laser beam. READ MORE

  4. 4. Martensitic Transformations in Steels : A 3D Phase-field Study

    Author : Hemantha Kumar Yeddu; John Ågren; Annika Borgenstam; Yunzhi Wang; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Phase-field method; Martensitic transformations; Plastic de formation; Multi-length scale modeling; Microstructure; Stress states; Steels;

    Abstract : Martensite is considered to be the backbone of the high strength of many commercial steels. Martensite is formed by a rapid diffusionless phase transformation, which has been the subject of extensive research studies for more than a century. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structures and Properties of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Displays

    Author : Marek Matuszczyk; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; smectic; displays; dielectric anisotropy and biaxiality; surface-stabilized structure; dielectric; paraelectric; liquid crystal alignment; electroclinic effect; grey scale; polarization; multiplexing; liquid crystal LC ; orthogonal and tilted phases; chirality; aligning layer; ferroelectric; polyimide; rubbing; light valves and modulators; SSFLC;

    Abstract : Liquid crystals have unique physical properties as they combine the features of solids and liquids. In thermotropic liquid crystals the degree of order varies with temperature resulting in an appearance of intermediate phases. READ MORE
