1. Metal-Organic Complexes at Surfaces
Abstract : The adsorption of different metal-organic complexes at surfaces was investigated by spectroscopic techniques (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy) and by scanning tunnelling microscopy. The investigation methods are able to provide atomic scale information on the studied systems, which moreover originates from the top-most atomic layers in a sample, meaning that they are surface sensitive techniques. 2. Development of metal complexes for water oxidation
Abstract : In the course of developing a water oxidation catalyst, five metal complexes have been synthesised, characterised and studied for catalytic activity. Three of them are dinuclear complexes (Ru, Co and Cu) of 2,6-bis[(2-hydroxybenzyl)-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-4-methylphenol (H3bbpmp). READ MORE

3. Development of metal complexes for water oxidation
Abstract : In an artificial version of photosynthesis, sunlight and water are used to produce fuels. Our research focuses on the bottleneck in this process, the photooxidation of water. In the course of developing a water oxidation catalyst, a number of metal complexes have been synthesised, characterised, and studied for catalytic activity. READ MORE

4. Theoretical studies of blue copper proteins
Abstract : In this thesis, a critical investigation is presented about the role of mechanical strain for the electron-transfer properties of the blue copper proteins. It has been found that the structure of a realistic model complex of the oxidised blue-copper active site, optimised in vacuum with the B3LYP method, has the same trigonal cupric geometry as in the protein. 5. Surface-Induced Modification of Supported Late Transition Metal Complexes
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis addresses the investigation of the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of late transition metal complexes supported on various surfaces. The research is aimed at studying the interaction between the molecules and the support, together with the intermolecular interaction. This knowledge is essential e.g. READ MORE
