1. Fatty Acid Desaturase Activities in Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease : Special Reference to Stearoyl-CoA-Desaturase and Biomarkers of Dietary Fat
Abstract : The development of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular diseases have been suggested to be influenced more by the quality than the amount of dietary fat. The FA composition of serum lipids may be used as biomarkers of dietary fat quality. READ MORE

2. Intestinal Gene Expression Profiling and Fatty Acid Responses to a High-fat Diet
Abstract : The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) regulates nutrient uptake, secretes hormones and has a crucial gut flora and enteric nervous system. Of relevance for these functions are the G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and the solute carriers (SLCs). READ MORE

3. Interaction between dietary factors and genetic risk for lipoprotein traits and cardiovascular disease
Abstract : In previous studies, a high quality diet has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to a low diet quality, and specific “healthy” diet components, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), have been hypothesized to reduce the risk of CVD. However, results from epidemiological studies have been conflicting. READ MORE

4. Early steps of Eicosanoid precursor absorption and tissue distribution
Abstract : Eicosanoids are important for a wide range of physiological and pathophysiological processes. How their essential fatty acid precursors are absorbed and tissue distributed is not well charactherized. When given orally to rats, arachidonic acid (20:4) was retained in the small intestine to a larger extent than linoleic acid (18:2). READ MORE

5. On diet in ankylosing spondylitis
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to examine the role of diet in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Patients were examined in: i) a postal questionnaire survey of dietary habits and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms; ii) a study on biomarkers of diet and disease activity; iii) a comparison of cardiovascular risk factors with the general population using data from the Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP), and; iv) a 21-week omega-3 fatty acid supplementation study regarding the effects on disease activity.
