  2. 2. Homotrimeric dUTPases : Principles of Catalysis and Inhibitor Design

    Author : Lorena Gonzalez Palmén; Jan Kvassman; Dolores Gonzalez-Pacanowska; Högskolan i Kalmar; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dUTPases; kinetics; ground state destabilization; inhibitors; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Natural Science; Naturvetenskap;

    Abstract : The ubiquitous enzyme dUTPase hydrolyzes dUTP into dUMP and pyrophosphate, preventing DNA fragmentation and cell death due to accumulation of dUTP. Inhibitors of dUTPase could serve as drugs in the treatment of cancers and infectious diseases. This thesis presents five studies. READ MORE

  3. 3. Influence of Aromaticity on Excited State Structure, Reactivity and Properties

    Author : Kjell Jorner; Henrik Ottosson; Rainer Herges; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; photochemistry; aromaticity; computational chemistry; Chemistry with specialization in Organic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot organisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes work that could help development of new photochemical reactions and light-absorbing materials. Focus is on the chemical concept "aromaticity" which is a proven conceptual tool in developing thermal chemical reactions. It is here shown that aromaticity is also valuable for photochemistry. 4. 4. Insulin-Producing Cells, Iron, Oxidative Stress, and Lysosomal Pathology

    Author : Beata Teresa Olejnicka; Enrique Cadenas; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Insulin-producing cells; redox-active iron; oxidative stress; lysosomes; desfenioxamine; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Accumulating evidence suggests that injnries caused by oxygen-derived radicals contribute to the destruction of pancreatic islet ß-cells in autoinnnune diabetes mellitus (diabetes type I, or IDDM). Oxidative stress may be caused by an enhanced production of oxygen-derived radicals, or by a decreased scavenging of such molecules. READ MORE

  5. 5. How transient interactions in the crowded cytosol affect protein mobility and stability

    Author : Sarah Leeb; Mikael Oliveberg; Magnus Wolf-Watz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diffusive transient interactions; macromolecular crowding; protein stability; in-cell NMR; protein evolution; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : Most biochemical reactions have evolved in crowded intracellular environments. However, the complexity of intracellular environments is often neglected in structural or functional studies of proteins. READ MORE
