1. Development and Applications of Hypervalent Iodine Compounds : Powerful Arylation and Oxidation Reagents
Abstract : The first part of this thesis describes the efficient synthesis of several hypervalent iodine(III) compounds. Electron-rich diaryliodonium salts have been synthesized in a one-pot procedure, employing mCPBA as the oxidant. Both symmetric and unsymmetric diaryliodonium tosylates can be isolated in high yields. READ MORE

2. Hypervalent Iodine Reagents in Metal-Free Arylations and Vinylations : Investigation of Suitable Coupling Partners and Synthesis of New Reagents
Abstract : This thesis concerns the development of metal-free reactions to obtain carbon-heteroatom and carbon-carbon bonds. This is achieved by transferring carbon ligands from hypervalent iodine reagents to suitable nucleophiles. READ MORE

3. Development and application of new chiral -amino alcohols in synthesis and catalysis : Use of 2-azanorboryl-3-methanols as common intermediates in synthesis and catalysis
Abstract : The development and application of unnatural amino alcohols, prepared via hetero-Diels-Alder reactions,in synthesis and catalysis is described. The studies are concerned with the [i]scope of the hetero-Diels-Alder reaction and preparation of important intermediates in the synthesis of antiviral agents,[ii ]application of amino alcohols in the ruthenium transfer hydrogenation of ketones,[iii ]use of similar precursors in the in situ generation of oxazaborolidines for reduction of ketones, and [iv] development and application of new chiral auxiliaries for dialkylzinc additions to activated imines, respectively. 4. Development of nonviral gene delivery and of anti-gene reagents
Abstract : Although significant progress has been made in the basic science and applications of various non-viral gene delivery systems, the majority of non-viral approaches are still much less efficient than viral vectors, especially for in vivo gene delivery, Therefore, non-viral gene delivery must be developed in order to increase the efficiency of in vivo delivery. Moreover, a novel anti-gene reagent was developed for sequence-specific gene silencing. READ MORE

5. Development of New Chiral Bicyclic Ligands : Applications in Catalytic Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation, Epoxidations, and Epoxide Rearrangements
Abstract : This thesis describes the synthesis and application of new chiral bicyclic ligands and their application in asymmetric catalysis. The studies involved: [i] The development of novel chiral bicyclic amino sulfur ligands and their use in transfer hydrogenation. READ MORE
