  1. 1. Immunopathology of the Pancreas in Type 1 Diabetes

    Author : Anna Wiberg; Olle Korsgren; Oskar Skog; Åke Lernmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; glucagon; T cells; autoantibodies; glucose transporters; islets of Langerhans; pancreas; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) results from a loss of functional insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. The etiology of T1D is poorly understood, but the detection of infiltrating inflammatory cells in the pancreas and circulating autoantibodies has led to the common notion that an autoimmune process plays a central role in the pathogenesis of the disease. 2. 2. Experimental Studies Aiming to Prevent Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Author : Tobias Rydgren; Stellan Sandler; Nils Welsh; Adrian Bone; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; Diabetes; Interleukin-1 trap; Simvastatin; Nitric oxide synthase; Cytokine; Pancreatic islet; Streptozotocin; Transplantation; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease in which T-cells and macrophages invade the islets of Langerhans and selectively destroy the insulin producing β-cells, either directly or through the secretion of e.g. cytokines and nitric oxide (NO). This thesis has studied possible strategies to prevent T1DM. READ MORE

  3. 3. Challenges in Islet Transplantation and Strategies to Improve Beta-Cell Function

    Author : Hanna Liljebäck; Per-Ola Carlsson; James Shaw; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islet transplantation; Type 1 diabetes; Mesenchymal stem cells; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The incidence of type 1 diabetes is increasing worldwide and therapies of islet transplantation and potential cell-based therapies are rapidly evolving. Choosing the optimal site for such therapies is crucial for safety and for obtaining the best possible outcome. READ MORE

  4. 4. Epidemiology of diabetes in a well defined population in Sweden: the Skaraborg Diabetes Registry

    Author : Bo Berger; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; diabetologi; Endokrinologi; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; IA-2A; GADA; ICA; islet antibodies; C-peptide; mortality; prevalence; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; Public health; incidence; epidemiology; epidemiologi; sekretion; Folkhälsa;

    Abstract : Time trends in prevalence, incidence and mortality was followed in 15000 diabetic patients in 1991?2005. Clinical findings, C-peptide protocols, and islet antibodies were compared in their ability to distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes, and factors associated with the prognosis of diabetes were explored. 5. 5. Exploration of Conditions Affecting Cytokine Production in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Author : Lina Thorvaldson; Stellan Sandler; Michael Welsh; Maria Holstad; Maria Faresjö; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; Cytokine; Diabetes; Tumor necrosis factor-α; Interferon-γ; Interleukin-4; Interleukin-10; Transplantation; Pancreatic islet; Glucose; Regulatory T cell; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Cytokines are soluble signalling mediators within the immune system, and have been shown to be of importance in the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). This thesis studied the production of cytokines in experimental models of T1D and during transplantation of insulin-producing islets of Langerhans. READ MORE
