6. Predictive Modeling of Turn-Taking in Spoken Dialogue : Computational Approaches for the Analysis of Turn-Taking in Humans and Spoken Dialogue Systems
Abstract : Turn-taking in spoken dialogue represents a complex cooperative process wherein participants use verbal and non-verbal cues to coordinate who speaks and who listens, to anticipate speaker transitions, and to produce backchannels (e.g., “mhm”, “uh-huh”) at the right places. READ MORE

7. Civil society in civil war : peace work and identity politics in Sri Lanka
Abstract : What possibilities do civil society actors have in contributing to peace in violent conflicts fought along identity lines? What are the problems involved in civil society peace work? This thesis takes on these questions, applying a critical, interpretative and constructivist approach. It draws the attention to actors who are often not visible in war and peace processes, given that a focus on outside intervention has dominated peace and conflict research. READ MORE

8. The Interactive Dynamics of Regulation : Exploring the Council of Europe's Monitoring of Ukraine
Abstract : In a time when a host of new and untested democracies seek membership in international organisations founded on liberal norms, the question of how to include new members without jeopardizing community values has become of growing concern, particularly as the regulation of practices in sovereign states often relies on soft moral or political commitment rather than on hard legal obligation. The Council of Europe’s (CoE) monitoring of new members after entry represents a soft method of socialising newcomers. READ MORE

9. Conflict in the Eye of the Storm : Micro-dynamics of Natural Disasters, Cooperation and Armed Conflict
Abstract : Many of the most destructive natural disasters have taken place in situations characterized by armed conflict and insecurity: the Indian Ocean tsunami in Sri Lanka and Indonesia in 2004, the floods in Pakistan in 2011, the drought in Somalia in 2011 and typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013. Surprisingly little research has systematically explored how armed conflict affects natural disaster management, and how shocks from natural disaster influence conflict dynamics. READ MORE

10. Data-driven Methods for Spoken Dialogue Systems : Applications in Language Understanding, Turn-taking, Error Detection, and Knowledge Acquisition
Abstract : Spoken dialogue systems are application interfaces that enable humans to interact with computers using spoken natural language. A major challenge for these systems is dealing with the ubiquity of variability—in user behavior, in the performance of the various speech and language processing sub-components, and in the dynamics of the task domain.
