  1. 1. Thermal formation and chlorination of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds

    Author : Stina Jansson; Stellan Marklund; Mats Tysklind; Jochen F. Müller; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dioxin; dioxin-like compounds; isomer distribution pattern; homologue profile; injection; O2PLS; PCDD; PCDF; PCN; PCBz; PCPh; MSW combustion; formation; chlorination; flue gas; quench profiles; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to an increased understanding of the formation of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in combustion processes. Although emissions to air from waste incineration facilities have been greatly reduced by the use of efficient air pollution control measures, the resulting residues (ashes and filters) are highly toxic and are classified as hazardous waste. 2. 2. PLE with integrated clean up followed by alternative detection steps for cost-effective analysis of dixons and dioxin-like compounds

    Author : Erik Spinnel; Peter Haglund; Patrik Andersson; Tuulia Hyötyläinen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pressurized liquid extraction PLE ; PLE-C; modular PLE; ELISA; dioxin; dioxin-like compounds; GCxGC; analytical methods; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are two structurally related groups of chemicals, generally referred to as `dioxins´. These are of great concern due to their high toxicity and global spread. READ MORE

  3. 3. Dioxin emissions from small-scale combustion of bio-fuel and household waste

    Abstract : Denna avhandling behandlar rökgasutsläpp av persistenta organiska föroreningar, framförallt dioxiner, vid förbränning av fasta biobränslen och torrt hushållsavfall i relativt små anläggningar (5-600 kW) utan avancerad rökgasreningsteknik.Samförbränning av avfall och biobränsle i effektiva mindre biobränslepannor testades som en alternativ strategi till den vanligen förekommande storskaliga hanteringen och förbränningen fast hushållsavfall. 4. 4. Bioassay analysis of dioxin-like compounds : response interactions and environmental transformation of Ah receptor agonists

    Author : Helena Olsman; Magnus Engwall; John P. Giesy; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioassay; dioxin-like; Ah receptor; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Dioxin-like compounds mediate their toxicity by binding to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and through this receptor a cascade of biochemical and toxic events are triggered. Mechanism-specific dioxin bioassays utilise the AhR coupled induction of endogenous CYP1A proteins or reporter gene systems for detection of dioxin-like compounds and other AhR ligands. READ MORE

  5. 5. Emissions from Fires Consequences for Human Safety and the Environment

    Author : Per Blomqvist; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; pollution control; Miljöteknik; Environmental technology; Byggnadsteknik; Building construction; incapacitation; CFD; simulations; emissions; particles; dioxin; PAH; gases; quantitative analysis; fire effluents; chemical characterisation; large-scale experiments;

    Abstract : Accidental fires represent a risk for people from the heat and fire effluents produced. It is clear from fire statistics that it is, in fact, the toxic gases that kill and injure many fire victims. Further, there are a number of compounds that are readily produced in fires, which have important sublethal effects on humans. READ MORE
