  1. 1. Development of a New Oral Vaccine against Diphtheria and the Study of its Immunogenicity in Mouse and Man

    Author : Niclas Rydell; Ingvar Sjöholm; Sveinbjörn Gizurarson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutics; oral vaccination; mucosal vaccination; diphtheria; biodegradable; microparticles; starch; CRM197; adjuvant; vaccine; Galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics; Galenisk farmaci;

    Abstract : Most pathogens enter the body via mucosal surfaces. In contrast to parenterally administered vaccination, mucosal vaccination has the advantage of eliciting both a systemic and a local mucosal immune response. An oral biodegradable adjuvant with these features would have great potential. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aspects of pertussis, pertussis vaccination and adverse events associated with aluminum adsorbed vaccines

    Author : Elisabet Bergfors; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Pertussis; parapertussis; pertussis toxoid; vaccine; vaccination; vaccine trial; adjuvant; aluminium; adsorbed vaccines; adverse event; pruritic nodules; itching nodules; granuloma; sensitisation; hypersensitivity; contact allergy;

    Abstract : The thesis originates in a clinical study of one of the new acellular pertussis vaccines performed in Göteborg in the 1990s. The monocomponent vaccine, pertussis toxoid adsorbed to aluminium hydroxide, had previously been shown to have an efficacy of 71%. READ MORE

  3. 3. Immune reconstitution after childhood leukemia. Aspects on immunizations and effects of Ara-C on the innate immune system

    Author : Torben Ek; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : acute lymphoblastic leukemia; immune reconstitution; immunization; antibody; avidity; ara-C; fever; cytokines;

    Abstract : Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can be cured with cytotoxic chemotherapy, but myelosuppression and immunosuppression are major side effects causing morbidity and even mortality from infections. Vaccinations with diphtheria toxoid (DT), tetanus toxoid (TT) and protein conjugated Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) capsular polysaccharide were used to investigate the adaptive immune system in a controlled study of 31 children after treatment for ALL. 4. 4. Invasive haemophilus influenzae infection. Clinical, immunologic and pathogenic aspects

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Haemophilus influenzae; epidemiology; mortality; vaccination; epiglottitis; meningitis; hearing loss; neuropsychology immunology; physiopathology; adhesion;

    Abstract : Invasive Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) infection, predominantly manifested as acute meningitis and epiglottitis, is a serious disease with associated mortality and residual handicap. Prevention of the disease is possible by vaccination against Hi serotype b (Hib). READ MORE

  5. 5. Feeding Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei strain F19 to infants during weaning : effects on adaptive immunity and gut microbial function

    Author : Christina West; Olle Hernell; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Outi Vaarala; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Introduction: Gut microbial composition has been associated with immune-mediated diseases. Breastfeeding yields a microbiota rich in bifidobacteria and promotes colonization by lactobacilli. Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli are considered health-promoting and are used as probiotics, i.e. READ MORE
