  1. 1. On enhancement of bone formation using local drug delivery systems

    Author : Ali Alenezi; Ann Wennerberg; Malmö universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bone formation; local drug delivery systems;

    Abstract : Introduction: Despite that many reports have confirmed the long-term clinical success rates associated with implant treatment, implant failure to achieve and maintain osseointegration still occurs in many cases. Local and sustained drug release at the bone-implant interface is one of the strategies that have been suggested to improve the osseointegration. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems for neural interfaces - a novel approach for improved biocompatibility

    Author : Alexander Dontsios Holmkvist; Neurofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neural interfaces; brain damage injury; Minocycline; Gelatin; Nanoparticles; Drug-delivery systems; Biocompatibility; Tissue responses; immunohistochemistry IHC ; Poly D; L-lactic-co-glycolic acid PLGA ; Hydrophobic ion paring; Emulsification-solvent-diffusion method; Drug release; Microglia activation;

    Abstract : The overall purpose of this thesis was to reduce brain tissue responses around implanted microelectrodes using a pharmacological strategy. One of the main aims was to develop and evaluate drug delivery systems that allow local administration of anti-inflammatory pharmaceutics. READ MORE

  3. 3. Environment-Sensitive Multifunctional Drug Delivery Systems

    Author : Jian Qin; Mamoun Muhammed; Marcus Textor; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materials chemistry; Materialkemi;

    Abstract : Drug delivery systems (DDS) with multiple functionalities such as environment-sensitive drug release mechanisms and visualization agents have motivated the biomedical community as well as materials chemists for more than a decade. This dissertation is concerned with the development of nanoparticles for multifunctional DDS  to tackle several crucial challenges in these complex systems, including polymeric nanospheres which respond to temperature change, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles/polymeric composite for magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents and drug carriers, immunoresponse of nanomaterials and injectable magnetic field sensitive ferrogels. 4. 4. Endocytosis of therapeutic macromolecules in tumor cells - Mechanistic aspects of the proteoglycan receptor function

    Author : Anders Wittrup; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LL-37; heparan sulfate; glypican; endocytosis; drug delivery; DNA uptake; Cancer; cell penetrating peptides; non-viral gene delivery; organelle purification; proteoglycan; syndecan.;

    Abstract : Novel therapeutics to combat cancer are urgently needed. Most current pharmacological therapies have severe side effects and are seldom curative. Macromolecular drugs, and in particular nucleic acid based drugs, offer a potential remedy for this situation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Interactions of Mucins with Biopolymers and Drug Delivery Particles

    Author : Olof Svensson; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mucin; chitosan; lactoperoxidase; multilayer; mucoadhesion; nanoparticles; ellipsometry;

    Abstract : The main components in the mucous gels apart from water are mucins, which are proteins with high molecular weights and an abundance of negatively charged oligosaccharide side chains. The aim of the investigations was to characterize interactions between mucins and other proteins that are present in the mucous gel, and also between mucins and components used in pharmaceutical formulations.
