    Abstract : This dissertation deals with aspects of axiomatization, intuition and visualization in the history of mathematics. Particular focus is put on the end of the 19th century, before David Hilbert's (1862–1943) work on the axiomatization of Euclidean geometry. The thesis consists of three papers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Selected Topics in Partial Differential Equations

    Author : Mattias Enstedt; Michael Melgaard; William Desmond Evans; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK; Applied mathematics; Tillämpad matematik;

    Abstract : This Ph.D. thesis consists of five papers and an introduction to the main topics of the thesis. In Paper I we give an abstract criteria for existence of multiple solutions to nonlinear coupled equations involving magnetic Schrödinger operators. READ MORE

  3. 3. The meaning(s) of inclusion in mathematics in student talk : Inclusion as a topic when students talk about learning and teaching in mathematics

    Author : Helena Roos; Despina Potari; Hanna Palmér; Nùria Planas; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; inclusion in mathematics; discourse analysis; students meaning s ; Matematikens didaktik; Mathematics education; Mathematical Education;

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to research and practice within the field of special education in mathematics with more knowledge about, and an understanding of, students´ meaning(s) of inclusion in mathematics education. Three research questions guide the study: What meaning(s) is/are ascribed, and how is inclusion used, in mathematics education research? What meaning(s) do the students ascribe to inclusion in mathematics learning and teaching? And what frames students´ meaning(s) of inclusion in mathematics learning and teaching?The first part of this study began with a systematic literature review on the notion of inclusion in mathematics education research, and the search resulted in 1,296 research studies. 4. 4. Symmetry in Randomness : Additive Functionals and Symmetries of Random Trees and Tree-Like Graphs

    Author : Christoffer Olsson; Stephan Wagner; Ralph Neininger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Random trees; Random graphs; Additive functionals; Automorphisms; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : Properties of symmetries in random trees and tree-like graphs are explored. The primary structures studied are Galton-Watson trees, unlabeled unordered trees as well as labeled subcritical graphs. READ MORE

  5. 5. Stability theory in finite variable logic

    Author : Marko Djordjevic; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematics; MATEMATIK; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : This thesis studies finite variable theories. To be more precise. complete Ln -theories, where Ln is the set of formulas in a first order language L in which at most n distinct variables occur. These need not be complete in the usual first order sense. READ MORE
