  1. 1. Improving the Quality and Safety of Drug Use in Hospitalized Elderly : Assessing the Effects of Clinical Pharmacist Interventions and Identifying Patients at Risk of Drug-related Morbidity and Mortality

    Author : Anna Alassaad; Håkan Melhus; Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes; Johan Sundström; Claes Mörlin; Lene Juel Kjeldsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adverse drug events; inappropriate prescribing; medication errors; polypharmacy; medication reconciliation; medication review; patient drug counseling; multi-dose dispensed drugs; risk-estimation; multiprofessional collaboration; prediction model; quality measure; rehospitalization;

    Abstract : Older people admitted to hospital are at high risk of rehospitalization and medication errors. We have demonstrated, in a randomized controlled trial, that a clinical pharmacist intervention reduces the incidence of revisits to hospital for patients aged 80 years or older admitted to an acute internal medicine ward. Abstract : This thesis examines factors that affect the quality of drug-use practices in Swedish nursing homes.The analysis comprises six consecutive studies. READ MORE

  3. 3. Refined in vitro Models for Prediction of Intestinal Drug Transport : Role of pH and Extracellular Additives in the Caco-2 Cell Model

    Author : Sibylle Neuhoff; Per Artursson; Anna-Lena Ungell; Patrick Augustijns; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; Caco-2 cells; membrane permeability; drug permeation; drug efflux ratios; drug uptake ratios; Cremophor EL; bovine serum albumin; pH-dependent permeability; drug transport; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI;

    Abstract : Drug transport across the intestinal epithelium is roughly predicted from permeability values obtained from Caco-2 cell monolayers. This thesis examines the important role of pH and extracellular additives for increasing the reliability and predictivity of the in vitro screening system, Caco-2. READ MORE

  4. 4. Computational Modelling in Drug Discovery : Application of Structure-Based Drug Design, Conformal Prediction and Evaluation of Virtual Screening

    Author : Martin Lindh; Anders Karlén; Antti Poso; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; drug discovery; docking; virtual screening; tuberculosis; conformal prediction;

    Abstract : Structure-based drug design and virtual screening are areas of computational medicinal chemistry that use 3D models of target proteins. It is important to develop better methods in this field with the aim of increasing the speed and quality of early stage drug discovery. READ MORE
