  1. 1. Endogenous Opioids and Voluntary Ethanol Drinking : Consequences of Postnatal Environmental Influences in Rats

    Author : Lisa Gustafsson; Ingrid Nylander; Erika Roman; Ryszard Przewlocki; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmaceutical pharmacology; Maternal separation; Maternal deprivation; Handling; Isolation; Alcohol; Two-bottle model; Four-bottle model; MEAP; Dynorphin B; Nociceptin orphanin FQ; Radioimmunoassay; Farmaceutisk farmakologi;

    Abstract : Genetic and environmental factors interact to determine the individual vulnerability to develop ethanol dependence. The neurobiological mechanisms underlying these processes are not fully understood. Endogenous opioid peptides have been suggested to contribute. READ MORE

  2. 2. Spectroscopic studies of dynorphin neuropeptides and the amyloid beta-peptide : The consequences of biomembrane interactions

    Author : Loïc Hugonin; Astrid Gräslund; Bernard Lebleu; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biophysics; Biofysik; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : Dynorphin A, dynorphin B and big dynorphin are endogenous opioid neuropeptides. They play an important role in a wide variety of physiological functions such as regulation of pain processing and memory acquisition. Such actions are generally mediated through the κ-receptors. 3. 3. Characterization of neuropeptide, monoamine, and amino acid release in the basal ganglia of the rat : neuronal dependence and reciprocal interactions

    Author : Zhi-Bing You; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : amino acids cholecystokinin dopamine dynorphin microdialysis morphineneostriatum rat substantia nigra.;

    Abstract : Functional interactions in the basal ganglia of rats were characterized with in vivomicrodialysis. The study was mainly focused on the dynorphin and cholecystokinin (CCK) systems. The extracellular levels of both dynorphin B and CCK were found in the pM range inthe neostriatum and substantia nigra under basal conditions. READ MORE

  4. 4. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning

    Author : Johan Sandin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : opioid; dynorphin; nociceptin; hippocampus; learning; memory; acetylcholine; HPLC; microinjections;

    Abstract : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 5. 5. On natural and drug-induced reward : genetic, biochemical and behavioral comparisons

    Author : Martin Werme; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : VTA; nucleus accumbens; wheel running; exercise; drugs of abuse; addiction; compulsive; deltaFosB; Nurr1; Dynorphin;

    Abstract : Work in this thesis compares natural and drug- induced reward at genetic, biochemical and behavioral levels with the objective to obtain information about key mechanisms underlying reward and addiction, and improve the understanding of compulsive elements that characterize addiction. Surveys among committed human runners have described running as addictive. READ MORE
