  1. 16. The linear and nonlinear biomechanics of the middle ear

    Author : Thomas Wright; Martin Lesser; Viktor Beryuk; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biotechnology; biomechanics; middle ear models; ossicular chain; Bioteknik; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses the biomechanics of the human middle ear, that part of the auditory system which converts sound pressure waves in air to fluid pressure waves in the cochlea. The middle ear's mechanism is analysed in four papers, three main and one supporting; in the main papers the middle ear is treated as a multi-particle, multi-rigid body ensemble possessing a variable number of degrees of freedom depending upon the case being investigated. 2. 17. Tissue engineering of the inner ear

    Author : Shaden Khalifa; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Our knowledge of the regenerative ability of the auditory system is still inadequate. Moreover, new treatment techniques for hearing impairment using cochlear implant and tissue engineering, call for further investigations. READ MORE

  3. 18. Local pharmacological treatment of inner ear disorders

    Author : Cecilia Engmér Berglin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Hearing disorders are among the top 10 in terms of burden of disease in middle- and high-income countries, affecting 250 million people worldwide. During the last few decades researchers have made significant advances in understanding the basic mechanisms and molecular biology of inner ear diseases. READ MORE

  4. 19. Ear and hearing problems in Turner syndrome

    Author : Annika Elmqvist Stenberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Turner syndrome; tympanic membrane pathology; hearing loss; otitis media; estrogen receptors; presbyacusis; immunology; mouse; rat; human; cochlea; psychosocial; audiometric testing.;

    Abstract : Turner Syndrome is a common chromosomal disorder and affects approximately one in every 2000 newborn girl. The syndrome is defined as a total (45,X) or partial loss of the second sex chromosome in combination with the typical characteristic features, which are short stature (less than 150 cm), absent estrogen production due to ovarian dysgenesis, with failure to enter puberty spontaneously and infertility. 5. 20. Pharmacokinetics and inner ear transport of cisplatin

    Author : Victoria Hellberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Cisplatin is a commonly used platinum anti-cancer drug. Regrettably cisplatin has dose-limiting ototoxic side effects, e.g. the drug can induce an irreversible hearing loss. READ MORE
