  1. 16. Quantifying Risk in Epidemiological and Ecological Contexts

    Author : Stefan Sellman; Uno Wennergren; Bo Ebenman; Meggan Craft; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The rates of globalization and growth of the human population puts ever increasing pressure on the agricultural sector to intensify and grow more complex, and with this intensification comes an increased risk of outbreaks of infectious livestock diseases. At the same time, and for the same reasons, the detrimental effect that humans have on other species with which we share the environment has never been more apparent, as the current rates of species loss from ecological communities rival those of ancient mass extinction events. 2. 17. Rural Gentrification in Desakota : Farmland Politics, Alternative Food Networks, and the Emergence of New Farmers in Taiwan

    Author : Chia-Sui Hsu; Institutionen för kulturgeografi och ekonomisk geografi; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Alternative Food Networks; desakota; farmhouse; new farmers; rural gentrification; Taiwan;

    Abstract : After post-war land reform that took place between 1949 and 1953, most Taiwanese farmers became owner-cultivators working on small landholdings. Post-war land reform paved the foundation for economic development and industrialization, processes that squeezed the agricultural sector and created changes in farming villages. READ MORE

  3. 18. Perturbed Markov Chains with Damping Component and Information Networks

    Author : Benard Abola; Sergei Silvestrov; Christopher Engström; Dmitrii Silvestrov; Anatoliy Malyarenko; Milica Rancic; Vladimir Anisimov; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematics Applied Mathematics; matematik tillämpad matematik;

    Abstract : This thesis brings together three thematic topics, PageRank of evolving tree graphs, stopping criteria for ranks and perturbed Markov chains with damping component. The commonality in these topics is their focus on ranking problems in information networks. READ MORE

  4. 19. Adaptive capacity for social and environmental change : The role of networks in Chile’s small-scale fisheries

    Author : Andrés Marín; Beatrice Crona; Nadine Marshall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; artisanal; benthic; Chile; coastal areas; collaborative management; disasters; ecosystem services; hazards; livelihoods; post-disaster; QCA; recovery; TURFs; Análisis Cualitativo Comparativo; artesanal; bentónico; Chile; desastres; manejo colaborativo; medios de vida; peligros; post desastre; recuperación; servicios ecosistémicos; zonas costeras; Sustainability Science; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling;

    Abstract : World’s small-scale fisheries (SSF) face permanent and increasing external changes and shocks that challenge their viability and potential as an engine of human sustainable development. It is broadly assumed and expected that fishers and their communities have the capacity to adapt to current and future social and ecological changes. READ MORE

  5. 20. Grow with the flow : Hydrological controls of riparian vegetation in boreal stream networks

    Author : Lenka Kuglerová; Roland Jansson; Hjalmar Laudon; Birgitta Malm-Renöfält; John Stella; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; boreal forest; channelization; groundwater; Krycklan catchment; liverworts; mosses; riparian buffers; riparian vegetation; river restoration; species richness; stream network; stream size; vascular plants;

    Abstract : What drives species diversity across landscapes is one of the most fundamental questions in ecology. Further, understanding the mechanisms underlying species diversity patterns is important not only for forming and challenging ecological theories but also essential for appropriate landscape management and effective nature conservation.
