  1. 1. Ecology and evolution of local adaptation in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Author : Giulia Zacchello; Jon Ågren; Xavier Picó; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; germination time; natural populations; Near isogenic lines; reciprocal transplants; seed bank; seed dormancy; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I investigate the ecological genetics of local adaptation in the annual herb Arabidopsis thaliana with the aim to identify key traits, agents of selection, and genomic regions contributing to adaptive differentiation. The thesis focuses on adaptive differentiation in timing of germination and seed dormancy between populations located close to the southern and northern range margins in Europe. READ MORE

  2. 2. Temperature- and body size scaling: effects on individuals, populations and food webs

    Author : Max Lindmark; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Climate warming impacts organisms directly through changes in their physiology. Empirical evidence suggest warming has already led to changes in growth, body size, population and community size-structure of natural populations. However, it is difficult to understand the underlying mechanisms from observational data alone. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hydrological modeling as a tool for sustainable water resources management: a case study of the Awash River Basin

    Author : Selome M. Tessema; Berit Balfors; Ulla Mörtberg; Shimelis Gebriye Setegn; Steve W. Lyon; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrological characteristics; Distributed hydrological modeling; Rainfall-runoff correlation; Streamflow prediction; Sustainable water management; Awash River Basin; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Abstract : The growing pressure on the world‘s fresh water resources is enforced by population growth that leads to conflicts between demands for different purposes. A main concern on water use is the conflict between the environment and other purposes like hydropower, irrigation for agriculture and domestic and industry water supply, where total flows are diverted without releasing water for ecological conservation. 4. 4. Strategy framework for sustainable industrial development in sub-Saharan Africa: Systems-evolutionary approach

    Author : Desta Mebratu; Internationella miljöinstitutet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; sustainable development; Sustainability; systems dynamics; evolutionary; development strategy; Economics of development; Environmental technology; Utvecklingsekonomi; kontroll av utsläpp; Miljöteknik; pollution control;

    Abstract : The principal objectives of this research were: · to develop a conceptual framework on sustainability and sustainable development and · to propose a strategy framework for sustainable industrial development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The research was done based on systems evolutionary approach having the following methodological principles as a guide. READ MORE

  5. 5. Exploring the metagenome of the Baltic Sea sediment

    Author : Fredrik Hårdeman; Sara Sjöling; Gunnar Sandström; Kornelia Smalla; Södertörns högskola; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Maringeologi; Bakterier;

    Abstract : Environmental microorganisms are fundamental to ecosystem function, acting as drivers in processes such as primary production, organic matter remineralisation, pollution remediation and global biogeochemical cycling. However, the study of the bacterial communities requires the application of advanced culture-independent methods considering that only a small fraction of the community is otherwise accessed.
