  1. 1. Verification of Dose Calculation Algorithms in Treatment Planning Systems for External Radiation Therapy: A Monte Carlo Approach

    Author : Elinore Wieslander; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; radiotherapy; dose calculation algorithm; verification; Monte Carlo calculation; electron beam; photon beam; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; treatment planning system;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a new verification concept, the virtual accelerator, for dose calculation algorithms used in treatment planning systems (TPSs) for external beam radiotherapy. The algorithm input data required to implement a treatment unit in the TPS are generated by Monte Carlo simulations as are the beam reference data needed for the subsequent evaluation of the dose calculation algorithm. 2. 2. Clinical application of intensity and energy modulated radiotherapy with photon and electron beams

    Author : Xiangkui Mu; Björn Zackrisson; Mikael Karlsson; Thomas Björk-Eriksson; Erik Blomquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; Radiotherapy; IMXT; IMET; IMPT; proton beams; electron beams; treatment planning; cancer induction; side-effects; fraction time; intensity modulated radiotherapy; Onkologi; Oncology; Onkologi; Oncology; onkologi;

    Abstract : In modern, advanced radiotherapy (e.g. intensity modulated photon radiotherapy, IMXT) the delivery time for each fraction becomes prolonged to 10-20 minutes compared with the conventional, commonly 2-5 minutes. The biological effect of this prolongation is not fully known. READ MORE

  3. 3. Radiotherapy in a FLASH : Towards clinical translation of ultra-high dose rate electron therapy

    Author : Elise Konradsson; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Radiotherapy; Dosimetry; Ultra-high dose rate; Electron therapy; FLASH; Fysicumarkivet A:2023:Konradsson;

    Abstract : FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) is a promising new approach to radiotherapy that has the potential to transform the field. By administering radiation at ultra-high dose rates (UHDR) on a millisecond timescale, FLASH-RT may increase normal tissue tolerance compared to conventional radiotherapy while maintaining the anti-tumoral effect. 4. 4. Absorbed Dose Determination and Characteristics of Degraded Electron Beams: Application to Intraoperative Radiation Therapy

    Author : Peter Björk; Internmedicin - epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; absorbed dose distribution; output factor; stopping-power ratio; beam characteristics; Monte Carlo calculation; electron beam dosimetry; applicator system; radiation therapy; linear accelerator; intraoperative radiotherapy;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to quantify limitations of and uncertainties in commonly used dosimetric techniques for relative absorbed dose determination in degraded electron beams, such as those encountered in intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) and small-electron-field radiotherapy. Three different detector types were investigated with regard to measurements of output factors and relative absorbed dose distributions: (1) a parallel-plate ionization chamber, (2) a p-type silicon diode detector and (3) a diamond detector. 5. 5. Radiobiological investigations of proton and light ion therapy

    Author : Nina Tilly; Michael Scholz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Radiobiology; Monte Carlo method; Radiotherapy; high-energy instrumentation; Protons; Light ions; RBE; LET; Radiobiological models; Radiobiologi; medicinsk strålningsfysik; Medical Radiation Physics;

    Abstract : During the last decade, the interest in proton and light ion beam therapy has increased considerably and several new centres are planned around the world. These particles have a large advantage due to their sharp physical dose distributions as compared to conventional radiotherapy beams. READ MORE
