  1. 16. Hidden in the Water : Development of screening strategies to identify new organic contaminants of emerging concern

    Author : Frank Menger; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Man-made chemicals enable and sustain our modern quality of life. These chemicals can, however, become contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). There is currently a considerable lag time between release of chemicals to the environment and their identification as CECs. READ MORE

  2. 17. Occurrence and removal of organic micropollutants in drinking water : Analytical approaches for wide-scope screening of contaminants of emerging concern

    Author : Rikard Tröger; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : With the rapidly expanding global population, demand for clean drinking water is increasing. However, the widespread use of synthetic chemicals makes it challenging to produce safe and clean drinking water. READ MORE

  3. 18. Comprehensive non-target screening to find and identify new biomagnifying organic contaminants in Baltic Sea top consumers

    Author : Andriy Rebryk; Peter Haglund; Christine Gallampois; Mats Tysklind; Jacob de Boer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; persistent organic pollutants; contaminants of emerging concern; non-target screening; GC-MS; biomagnification; temporal trends; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi; environmental science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The development of industrial processes in the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular oil refining, resulted in a huge discovery and subsequent large-scale production of a variety of chemicals. These useful chemicals supposedly made the everyday lives of people easier and better by, for instance, controlling the spread of diseases such as malaria, through the use of DDT and other organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). 4. 19. Wide-scope screening for contaminants of emerging concern in archived biota: Method development, suspect prioritisation, and non-target screening in a novel identification tool

    Author : Wiebke Dürig; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Environmental monitoring of hazardous chemicals in wildlife conventionally uses target screening for selected contaminants, but relatively few contaminants are moni-tored and knowledge of potentially hazardous contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in wildlife is lacking. In this thesis, a non-target screening (NTS) method com-bined with temporal trend analysis was developed and applied as a prioritisation tool for identification of CECs in top predators, using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). 5. 20. Developmental Neurotoxicity Testing Using In vitro Approaches

    Author : Helena Högberg; Anna Price; Barbara Cannon; Kevin Crofton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; Toxikologi; toxikologi; Toxicology;

    Abstract : There is a great concern about children’s health as the developing brain in foetuses and children is much more vulnerable to injury caused by different classes of chemicals than the adult brain. This vulnerability is partly due to the fact that the adult brain is well protected against chemicals by the blood brain barrier (BBB) and children have increased absorption rates and diminished ability to detoxify many exogenous compounds, in comparison to that of adults.
