  1. 1. Effect of Ischaemia-Reperfusion on Rabbit Kidney and Human Brain

    Author : Jagdish Shivlal Gondalia; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Free radicals; ischaemia-reperfusion; cell bioenergetics; NMR; ESR; carotid artery stenosis; endarterectomy; allopurinol; acetylcysteine; MMP-1; ICAM-1; MCP-9; oxLDL;

    Abstract : Free radicals are produced in various organs at ischaemia-reperfusion. The final stage in radical damage is lipid peroxidation. We have demonstrated previously that a lipid-soluble antioxidant improves restoration of bioenergetics in rabbit kidneys after ischaemia, as reflected in 31P spectrometry. READ MORE

  2. 2. Carotid stenosis

    Author : Elias Johansson; Per Wester; Conny Arnerlöv; Arne Lindgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carotid stenosis; Risk; Recurrence; Stroke; TIA; Near-occlusion; Carotid Endarterectomy; Delay; Panoramic Radiographs; Cardiovascular medicine; Kardiovaskulär medicin; Neurology; Neurologi; Internal Medicine; invärtesmedicin; neurologi; Neurology; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Carotid stenosis is one of several causes of ischemic stroke and entails a high risk of ischemic stroke recurrence. Removal of a carotid stenosis by carotid endarterectomy results in a risk reduction for ischemic stroke, but the magnitude of risk reduction depends on several factors. READ MORE

  3. 3. Clinical Studies on Dark Adaptation: with Particular Reference to Carotid Artery Disease

    Author : Ulf Havelius; Oftalmologi (Malmö); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; polycythemia; photoreceptors; phlebotomy; ocular blood flow; headache; dilation lag; dark adaptometry; dark adaptation; color Doppler imaging; carotid artery stenosis; carotid artery disease; carotid endarterectomy; pupil; pupillometry; retinal blood flow; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi;

    Abstract : Purpose: To study dark adaptation in patients with symptomatic carotid artery disease or polycythemia before and after treatment. This necessitated determinations of pupillary changes as such may influence the findings. To determine whether changes in the retinal blood flow in light and darkness occur in healthy humans. 4. 4. Cost-effectiveness and Value of Further Research of Treatment Strategies for Cardiovascular Disease

    Author : Martin Henriksson; Per Carlsson; Fredrik Lundgren; Mark Scupher; Hans Severens; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Economic evaluation; decision-analytic modelling; prioritising research; carotid endarterectomy; abdominal aortic aneurysm; screening; non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome; early intervention; Health and medical services in society; Hälso- och sjukvård i samhället;

    Abstract : Economic evaluations provide a tool to estimate costs and health consequences of competing medical technologies, ultimately to aid decision makers when deciding which medical technologies should be funded from available resources. Such decisions inevitably need to be taken under uncertainty and it is not clear how to approach them in health care decision-making. READ MORE

  5. 5. The role of duplex scanning in the management of carotid artery disease

    Author : Karl Logason; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Duplex scanning; Doppler spectral analysis; duplex criteria; Doppler angle of insonation; carotid artery stenosis; carotid endarterectomy; spontaneous cervical artery dissection; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Abstract : Extracranial carotid artery disease, mainly due to atherosclerosis, is a common cause of stroke. The risk for future stroke can be reduced in selected patients by carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Duplex scanning has been increasingly used for diagnosis of carotid artery disease. READ MORE
