  1. 1. Influence of electrode material and stochastic factors on the performance and microbial community assembly in microbial electrochemical systems

    Author : Marie Abadikhah; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microbial community assembly; bioanode; biocathode; biochemical system;

    Abstract : Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are systems with microbial communities in the form of biofilms on electrode surfaces. The electrogenic bacteria in the anode biofilm act as catalysts for the oxidization of organic compounds, leading to release of electrons, generation of electrical current, and production of hydrogen and methane at the cathode. 2. 2. Biodiversity and Species Extinctions in Model Food Webs

    Author : Charlotte Borrvall; Bo Ebenman; Owen Petchey; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; food webs; redundancy; relaxation time; stability; stochasticity; species deletion; species extinction; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Many of the earth’s ecosystems are experiencing large species losses due to human impacts such as habitat destruction and fragmentation, climate change, species invasions, pollution, and overfishing. Due to the complex interactions between species in food webs the extinction of one species could lead to a cascade of further extinctions and hence cause dramatic changes in species composition and ecosystem processes. 3. 3. Food Webs, Models and Species Extinctions in a Stochastic Environment

    Author : Patrik Karlsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ekologi; Ecology; functional redundancy; trophospecies; species aggregation; environmental stochasticity; interaction strength; spectral colour; food web structure; food webs; extinction risk;

    Abstract : In light of the current global mass extinction of species, ecologists are facing great challenges. In order to reverse the path towards additional extinctions early warning systems to guide management actions need to be developed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Population and Community Dynamics in Variable Environments

    Author : Jörgen Ripa; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dispersal; Moran effect; linear dynamics; synchrony; power spectrum; autocorrelation; extinction risk; population dynamics; environmental stochasticity; migration; stochastic modelling; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : All natural populations fluctuate in space and time. These fluctuations are a result of internal dynamic processes, and of a variable environment. READ MORE

  5. 5. Establishment, Growth and Population Dynamics in two Mosses of Old-growth Forests

    Author : Karin Wiklund; Håkan Rydin; Staffan Karlsson; Lloyd Stark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Buxbaumia viridis; Neckera pennata; bryophyte; pH; phosphorus; water potential; precipitation; metapopulation; environmental stochasticity; ecology; plant; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Biodiversity in forests depends on long canopy continuity and existence of different elements which function as substrates for varying organisms. Bryophytes often occupy specific substrates with a patchy distribution. READ MORE
