  1. 1. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha as a target cytokine in vascular disease

    Author : Lena Brånén; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; apoptosis; cell replication; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet; spindle-shaped; epithelioid; smooth muscle cells; periadventitial cuff injury; sTNF-R1; bone marrow transplantation; chimeric fusion protein; atherogenic diet; ApoE; TNF-a; genetically altered mice; en face preparation; atherosclerosis; neointimal hyperplasia;

    Abstract : Inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis. One of the most potent pro-inflammatory cytokines is tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a), a cytokine identified to have a pathogenic role in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). READ MORE

  2. 2. Electron Microscopy in Diagnostic Pathology with Reference to Mesenchymal Tumors

    Author : Birgitta Carlén; Tumörmikromiljö; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; synovial sarcoma; Kaposi´s sarcoma; epithelioid sarcoma; parachordoma; alveolar soft part sarcoma; small cell malignant tumors of childhood and adolescence; cultured cells; surgical specimens; Transmission electron microscopy; fine needle aspiration; General pathology; pathological anatomy; Patologi allmän ; patologisk anatomi;

    Abstract : The experience acquired over a period of 15 years of diagnostic electron microscopy of fine needle aspirates and surgical specimens constitutes the base for this thesis. Some of the tumors analyzed represent rare soft tissue tumors, and consequently not very often ultrastructurally described. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on mesothelial differentiation : prognostic and therapeutic approaches to malignant mesothelioma

    Author : Xiaojuan Sun; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mesothelium; Differentiation; Malignant Mesothelioma; Proteasome; Selenium; Thioredoxin;

    Abstract : Malignant mesothelioma (MM), a tumor with a poor prognosis, causes the death of most patients within a year of diagnosis since various treatments seem to have little effect on its outcome. The biological behavior of MM varies greatly, and this heterogeneity is related to its morphology, which may be epithelioid, sarcomatoid (fibroblastoid) or biphasic, the sarcomatoid phenotype being associated with a shorter survival. 4. 4. Mesothelial differentiation, mesothelioma and tumor markers in serous cavities

    Author : Miklós Gulyás; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mesothelium; mesothelioma; differentiation; differential gene expression; proteoglycans; tumor markers; effusion;

    Abstract : Mesothelial cells covering the serous membranes are of mesodermal origin although they acquire several characteristics of epithelial cells. The cytological and histological diagnosis of malignant tumors in serous cavities is sometimes a major challenge: the main diagnostic alternatives are reactive benign mesothelium, mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma. 5. 5. DNA ploidy, proliferation markers and prognosis in malignant melanoma

    Author : Margareta Karlsson; Christer Lindholm; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Malignant melanoma is a serious disease when metastases occur. It is therefore important to investigate possible tools for prediction to the outcome of the disease. In the present investigation 265 patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma and uveal melanoma was investigated with flow cytometry. READ MORE
