  1. 1. Fate and exposure assessment of PCDD/Fs at contaminated sites

    Author : Annika Åberg; Karin Wiberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; contaminated sites; dioxins; PCDD F; exposure; food chain; modeling; risk assessment; physical-chemical properties; förorenade områden; dioxiner; PCDD F; exponering; födokedja; modellering; riskbedömning; fysikaliska-kemiska egenskaper; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzo-furans (PCDFs) belong to the most toxic compounds known to science and they are defined as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) under the Stock-holm Convention. The general human exposure to PCDD/Fs is primarily through dietary intake. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hazard screening of contaminated sites : bioavailable fractions and biological in vitro tools

    Author : Daniel Ragnvaldsson; Mats Tysklind; Per Leffler; Lars Lövgren; Bengt-Erik Bengtsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hazard screening; bioavailability; metal pollution; in vitro cytotoxicity; water extraction; CCA; arsenic genotoxicity; genotoxicity; Contaminated soil; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The environmental bioavailability of contaminants, rather than their total concentrations in the soil compartment play a decisive role for the risks associated with contaminated sites. Various soil constituents and abiotic conditions have strong influence on bioavailability, which may vary substantially between different locations. READ MORE

  3. 3. Exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and health risks for mother and child

    Author : Ebba Malmqvist; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; air pollution; pregnancy; birth outcomes; ozone modeeling; preeclampsia; Type1 Diabetes;

    Abstract : We had in the present thesis the unique possibility to use, in a socio-economically relatively homogenous population, high quality registry information on a population-based birth cohort (84 039 births during the period 1999-2005) in Scania (Skåne), the most Southern county of Sweden. The aim of the thesis was to investigate whether exposure to air pollution, in an area of low-levels exposures, during different periods of the pregnancy was associated with birth outcomes, pregnancy complications and risk of the child to develop type I diabetes (T1D). 4. 4. Towards sustainability of environmental protection : recovery of nutrients from wastewater filtration and the washing of arsenic contaminated soils

    Author : Lea Rastas Amofah; Helen French; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : Conventional methods for wastewater treatment and remediation of the sites withcontaminated soils focus on protection of human health, receiving waters and theenvironment. Towards this end, these methods concentrate on the reduction or removal of polluting substances, and therefore, are not well suited for creating resources through the recovery of nutrients, energy and decontaminated soils. 5. 5. Soil Remediation and Sustainable Development : Creating Appropriate Solutions for Marginalized Regions

    Author : Henrik Haller; Anders Jonsson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The scope of this doctoral thesis is appropriate soil remediation methods for marginalized regions that go beyond pollution reduction targets and include strategies to support sustainable development. Contaminated soil from industrial or agricultural activities poses potential health threats to animals and humans and also threatens economic systems by making land unsuitable for agriculture and other economic purposes.
