  1. 1. Tailoring and Characterization of Polymer-linked Fibrillar Structures

    Author : Maria F. Cortes Ruiz; Lars Wågberg; Peter Olsén; Michael Malkoch; Gil Garnier; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cellulose nanofibrils; hydrogels; cellulose fibres; functionalisation; structure-property relationships.; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The development of sustainable and renewable materials is paramount in today’s society. As the most abundant biopolymer on Earth, cellulose from cellulose-rich fibres is an excellent alternative for advanced and innovative material solutions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Immunoglobulins in the adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes in malaria

    Author : Carin Scholander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Plasmodium falciparum; rosetting; cytoodhesion; immunoglobulins; serum proteins; fibrillar structures; malarial anaemia; placental malaria; PfEMP1;

    Abstract : Characterisation of the delicate cell-to-cell interactions involved in the binding of Plasmodium falciparum- infected erythrocytes to host cells is central for the understanding of the development of severe malaria. Infected erythrocytes adhere in the deep vasculature of several organs, sequestration, leading to cerebral malaria, pulmonary oedema or renal failure. READ MORE

  3. 3. Amyloid β peptide: from monomer solubility to fibril structure

    Author : Veronica Lattanzi; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alzheimer´s disease; Aβ solubility; small angle scattering; number of filaments; Aβ40; Aβ42 and Aβ42 S26Q ; fibril structure;

    Abstract : Alzheimer´s disease (AD) is the most common human neuro-degenerative disease characterized by the formation of cerebral plaques. Several are the amyloid-beta (Aβ) variants found in the brain of healthy individuals. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the colloidal and molecular aspects of peptide self-assembly

    Author : Axel Rüter; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Peptide self-assembly; Aggregation kinetics; Peptide hydrogel; Small angle scattering; Rheology;

    Abstract : Peptide self-assembly is a spontaneous process, ubiquitous in nature for the creation of highly ordered and complex biological structures, making it a sought after technique in the development of novel biocompatible materials. The process is also strongly associated with various neurodegenerative diseases in the formation of amyloid plaques in diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, where fully functioning proteins aggregate are reassembled into nonfunctional fibrillar aggregates that eventually lead to cell death. 5. 5. Mechanistic and morphological studies of Aβ amyloid formation using surface plasmon resonance

    Author : Md Tohidul Islam; Anders Olofsson; Ludmilla Morozova-Roche; Vytautas Smirnovas; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; medicinal chemistry; läkemedelskemi; medicinsk biokemi; Medical Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and apart from the individual suffering AD also causes a large economic burden for society. AD is associated with progressive neurodegeneration and atrophy of the brain. READ MORE
