  1. 1. Electrostatic plasma waves associated with collisionless magnetic reconnection : Spacecraft observations

    Author : Konrad Steinvall; Yuri Khotyaintsev; Daniel Graham; Andris Vaivads; Jonathan Rae; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic reconnection; Plasma waves; Electron holes; Solar wind; Magnetosphere; Magnetospheric Multiscale; Solar Orbiter; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process where changes in magnetic field topology result in explosive energy conversion, plasma mixing, heating, and energization. In geospace, magnetic reconnection couples the Earth’s magnetosphere to the solar wind plasma, enabling plasma transport across the magnetopause. READ MORE

  2. 2. Substorm Features in the High-Latitude Ionosphere and Magnetosphere : Multi-Instrument Observations

    Author : Eva Borälv; Hermann Opgenoorth; Mark Lester; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; Substorm; Convection; magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Space and Plasma Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Abstract : The space around Earth, confined in the terrestrial magnetosphere, is to some extent shielded from the Sun's solar wind plasma and magnetic field. During certain conditions, however, strong interaction can occur between the solar wind and the magnetosphere, resulting in magnetospheric activity of several forms, among which substorms and storms are the most prominent. 3. 3. Magnetic Reconnection in Space Plasmas : Cluster Spacecraft Observations

    Author : Alessandro Retinò; Mats André; Andris Vaivads; Bengt U. Ö. Sonnerup; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Space and plasma physics; space physics; plasma astrophysics; plasma physics; transport processes; boundary layers; magnetic reconnection; turbulence; particle acceleration; solar system; magnetospheres; Rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Abstract : Magnetic reconnection is a universal process occurring at boundaries between magnetized plasmas, where changes in the topology of the magnetic field lead to the transport of charged particles across the boundaries and to the conversion of electromagnetic energy into kinetic and thermal energy of the particles. Reconnection occurs in laboratory plasmas, in solar system plasmas and it is considered to play a key role in many other space environments such as magnetized stars and accretion disks around stars and planets under formation. 4. 4. Heat and water flows in freezing and thawing soils : numerical modelling, laboratory and field observations

    Author : Helén Engelmark; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Vattenteknik; Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : A laboratory study of infiltration rates into frozen and unfrozen fine sand, including temperature effects of both soil and infiltration water, is reported. The average infiltration rate varied from about 10.6 mm/min for unfrozen conditions, to about 1-2 mm/min for frozen conditions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Inference on Dark Matter in Effective Field Theories : From XENON1T towards XENONnT: Chiral effective field theory analysis of nuclear recoils, single electrons and uncommon background modelling

    Author : Vasile Cristian Antochi; Jan Conrad; Björn Penning; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dark Matter; Direct Detection; Effective Field Theory; Chiral Effective Field Theory; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : Cosmological and astronomical observations show that most of the matter in the Universe is dark. This dissertation provides an overview of the dark matter evidence, and focuses on the particle dark matter hypothesis, describing possible particle candidates, concentrating on the Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs).
