  1. 1. Gill EROD Activity in Fish : A Biomarker for Waterborne Ah-receptor Agonists

    Author : Alexandra Abrahamson; Ingvar Brandt; Björn Brunström; Janneche Utne Skaare; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; biomarker; fish; gill; CYP1A; EROD; environmental monitoring; induction; inhibition; PAH; PCB; produced water; Biologi;

    Abstract : Induction of the cytochrome P450(CYP)1A protein and the connected increase in 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity are common biomarkers in fish. Enhanced activity of this protein signals exposure to Ah-receptor agonists such as chlorinated dioxins, co-planar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). 2. 2. Oxidation of fish lipids during gastrointestinal in vitro digestion

    Author : Karin Larsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TBARS; HHE; salmon; lipids; TIM; fish; HNE; in vitro digestion; gastrointestinal; aldehydes; cod liver oil; n-3 PUFA; herring; lipid oxidation; MDA;

    Abstract : Fish and many other marine organisms, contain long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA), e.g. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA has shown beneficial effects in diseases related to inflammatory processes, such as cardiovascular diseases. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effects of Antioxidant and Lipid Lowering Treatment on Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease : With special reference to Mixed Tocopherols and Stable Fish Oil

    Author : Meilin Liu; Afaf Kamal-Eldin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Cardiovascular disease; Antioxidants; Tocopherols; Endothelial constitutive nitric oxide synthase; Superoxide dismutase; Protein kinase C; Fish oils; Fatty acids; Simvastatin; Lipoprotein; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; rättsmedicin; Forensic Medicine;

    Abstract : Vitamin E in food, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and lipid lowering treatment with statins have been found to decrease the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiac death. However, clinical trials revealed no beneficial effect of intake of alpha-tocopherol alone. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of non-fish based raw materials on the fish muscle quality of salmonids

    Author : Jinfeng Pan; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Salmonids are considered as fatty fish and a healthy food. They are characterized by a high proportion of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFA). There is great interest in producing high-quality salmonids with a reduced use of fish-based materials and a challenge to adjust feeds towards more sustainable. READ MORE

  5. 5. Oxidative Damage in Fish Used as Biomarkers in Field and Laboratory Studies

    Author : Bethanie Carney Almroth; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fish; oxidative stress; antioxidant enzymes; glutathione; protein carbonyls; lipid peroxidation; biomarkers; pollution; aging;

    Abstract : Many toxic xenobiotics entering into the aquatic environment exert their effects through redox cycling. Oxidative stress, incorporating both antioxidant defences as well as oxidative damage, is a common effect in organisms exposed to xenobiotics in their environment. READ MORE
