1. Translational genetics identifies a novel target to treat fatty liver disease
Abstract : Fatty liver disease (FLD) is rapidly prevailing as the most common liver disease worldwide, with an estimated of one-quarter of the global population affected. Environmental and genetic determinants contribute to FLD susceptibility. READ MORE

2. MRI and SPECT neuroimaging in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease
Abstract : This thesis concerns measurements of regional brain volumes using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and of regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) in patients investigated for suspected dementia. In the first study (I), visually rated MRI-, SPECT and EEG-pathology were compared between patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and patients with Frontal Lobe Dementia (FLD). READ MORE

3. Regulators of Membrane Fluidity
Abstract : Caenorhabditis elegans PAQR-2 (a homolog of the mammalian AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 proteins) and IGLR-2 (homolog of the mammalian LRIG proteins) form a complex at the plasma membrane that regulates fatty acid desaturation to protect against saturated fatty acid-induced membrane rigidification. Maintenance of membrane homeostasis is fundamental for most cellular processes and, given its importance, robust regulatory mechanisms must exist that adjust lipid composition to compensate for dietary variation. 4. Membrane Fluidity Regulation: From C. elegans to mammalian cells
Abstract : Biological membranes are primarily an assembly of lipids and proteins. Collectively, these constituents within a phospholipid bilayer determine the physical membrane properties such as fluidity, viscosity, thickness, packing and permeability. Maintenance of membrane properties within acceptable margins, i.e. READ MORE

5. Simulation of bending and hydroforming : constitutive modeling and failure prediction
Abstract : In recent years, the automotive industry has shown increased interest in reducing weight and improving environmental effects of cars. This has lead to an increased use of lightweight parts. READ MORE
