  1. 1. Odour-mediated nectar foraging in the silver Y moth, Autographa gamma

    Author : Dainius Plepys; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; predation risk; Noctuidae; Lepidoptera; flight tunnel; GC-EAD; single sensillum; sprayer; ultrasound; floral volatiles; attraction; foraging; mate-finding; lilac aldehydes; olfactory receptor neurones; Ecology; Ekologi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : It is well established that floral odours play a significant role in the nectar foraging behaviour in Lepidoptera and other insect orders. Floral odour may elicit searching, alighting and feeding behaviours alone or in concert with visual stimuli. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aroma components in Vangueria infausta L. : Characterization of components using GC_MS and aroma loss during drying

    Author : Rui Ráice; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; encapsulation.; threshold; drying; volatiles; vangueria infausta;

    Abstract : This study focuses on the fruit of the African medlar (Vangueria infausta L., family Rubiaceae). The investigation included the development of an extraction procedure of volatile components from the fruit matrix, a purification step, separation, identification and quantification. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Ecology of Floral Signals in Penstemon digitalis

    Author : Rosalie Burdon; Amy L. Parachnowitsch; James Thomson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Antimicrobial; Bombus impatiens learning; indirect signal; multimodal; nectar; protandry; signal-reward association; Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs ; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined field observations and lab experiments to explore the ecological significance of floral signals in a North American wildflower, Penstemon digitalis. More specifically, to determine the potential mechanisms driving selection on floral scent, I studied how scent mediates interactions with pollinators and antagonists by (1) observing spatiotemporal variation in scent emission (2), floral volatile ability to suppress microbes (3) the honest advertisement of nectar, and (4) if scent could aid pollinator learning by reinforcing visual signals. 4. 4. Recognition and modulation of olfactory signals in the noctuid moth spodoptera littoralis

    Author : Ahmed Saveer; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Food, mates and host plants are essential resources for plant-feeding insects. Optimal resource localization that fulfils the physiological need and reproductive goals of an insect is of utmost importance. READ MORE
