  1. 1. Laser-Induced Incandescence for Soot Diagnostics: Theoretical Investigation and Experimental Development

    Author : Jonathan Johnsson; Förbränningsfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; premixed flat flames; fractal soot aggregates; laser-induced incandescence; soot; soot optical properties; soot absorption function; laser diagnostics; Fysicumarkivet A:2012:Johnsson;

    Abstract : Laser-induced incandescence, LII, is a laser-diagnostic technique that can be used to measure the volume fraction and the sizes of soot particles suspended in a gas, such as within a combustion process or in its exhausts. The technique is based on the facts that the time-decay of the radiation from laser-heated soot particles is directly related to the particle size in the probed volume, and that the time-integrated radiation is related to the soot volume fraction. 2. 2. Optical investigations and characterization of soot of different morphology and maturity

    Author : Sandra Török; Förbränningsfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Laser-induced incandescence; Extinction; Elastic light scattering; mini-CAST; Soot; Brown carbon; Black carbon; Maturity; Morphology; Fysicumarkivet A:2021:Török;

    Abstract : The formation path from small poorly absorbing incipient soot to larger fractal-like strongly absorbing black soot is extensive, and along this path the optical and physicochemical properties of the soot evolve. Soot emitted into the atmosphere may originate from some stage of this process, which will result in a wide spectrum of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere which may interact with the sun and influence the radiative balance of the earth. 3. 3. Modelling and Simulation of Thermal Radiation in Biomass Combustion

    Author : Thomas Nilsson; Förbränningsfysik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; heat load; gas turbine; Thermal engineering; applied thermodynamics; Termisk teknik; termodynamik; porous media; fixed bed; biomass; wood; FG-DVC; combustion; DOM; P1-approximation; Mie theory; RDG-PFA; EWBM; thermal radiation; soot;

    Abstract : This thesis presents numerical investigations and simulations of fixed bed combustion of wood, models for predicting thermal radiative properties of particles and gases related to the combustion of wood, and a review of heat load calculations in gas turbines. All subjects have a common factor in thermal radiation. READ MORE

  4. 4. X-Ray Diagnostics in Combustion - Study of Particle Formation in Flames Using Combined Small- and Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering

    Author : Linda Vallenhag; Förbränningsfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanoparticles; soot particles; WAXS; X-ray scattering; SAXS; combustion; Fysicumarkivet A:2014:Vallenhag;

    Abstract : In the thesis work, two X-ray scattering techniques, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) were combined to study particle formation in-situ and non-intrusively in ethylene laboratory flames. Combining these two techniques enabled information concerning the size and concentration as well as the subnanometer structure of the nanoparticles within the 1–100 nm range there to be obtained. 5. 5. On the use of aerosol optical properties and satellite-retrieved trace gases in regional air quality modelling

    Author : Emma Andersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Model; Climate; Radiation; Satellite; Air Quality;

    Abstract : The effects of anthropogenic pollutants in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) have been shown, historically and scientifically, to have a deleterious effect on both plant and animal life. Pollutants such as near-surface ozone and soot (black carbon) are two notorious examples with clear anthropogenic sources. READ MORE
