  1. 1. Dynamics of omnivorous crayfish in freshwater ecosystems

    Author : Karin Olsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; crayfish; freshwater ecosystems; niche width; growth rate; stable isotope analysis; recruitment; RNA:DNA analysis; Ecology; food availability and quality; trophic position; population dynamics;

    Abstract : In this thesis I examine the dynamics of crayfish in streams and lakes. I have studied the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on abundance, growth, trophic position, niche breadth, and recruitment of crayfish, by conducting field studies, an outdoor channel experiment and timeseries analysis. 2. 2. Land Use, Freshwater Flows and Ecosystem Services in an Era of Global Change

    Author : Line Gordon; Carl Folke; David Molden; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; freshwater; green water; ecosystem services; integrated water resources management; food production; land use and land cover change; vulnerability; resilience; hydrological cycle; global change; Australia; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to analyse interactions between freshwater flows, terrestrial ecosystems and human well-being. Freshwater management and policy has mainly focused on the liquid water part (surface and ground water run off) of the hydrological cycle including aquatic ecosystems. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ecology across Boundaries : Food web coupling among and within ecosystems

    Author : Pia Bartels; Peter Eklöv; Lars J. Tranvik; Daniel E. Schindler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cross-ecosystem; food web; habitat coupling; terrestrial-aquatic linkages; subsidy; allochthonous; lake ecosystem; population divergence; trait variation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Abstract : Cross-boundary movements of energy and material are ubiquitous. Freshwater ecosystems receive nutrients, dissolved, and particulate organic matter from adjacent terrestrial ecosystems, whereas terrestrial ecosystems mainly receive prey organisms and detritus deposited by physical processes such as floods from freshwater ecosystems. 4. 4. Biotic resistance in freshwater fish communities

    Author : Anna Henriksson; Göran Englund; David Wardle A.; Jun Yu; Sebastian Diehl; Donald Jackson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biotic resistance; freshwater fish; introductions; invasions; invasion success; invasibility; invasiveness; species richness; saturation; species identity; weighted species richness;

    Abstract : Invasions of non-native species cause problems in ecosystems worldwide, and despite the extensive effort that has been put into research about invasions, we still lack a good understanding for why some, but not other, communities resist these invasions. In this doctoral thesis I test hypotheses on biotic resistance using a large dataset of more than 1000 both failed and successful introductions of freshwater fish into Swedish lakes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ecological effects of pesticides in freshwater model ecosystems

    Author : Lina Wendt-Rasch; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; Hydrobiology; community; zooplankton; algae; herbicide; insecticide; pesticide mixture; macrophytes; cypermethrin; metsulfuron-methyl; risk assessment; pesticides; microcosms; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis I have investigated the effects of pesticide exposure on the ecosystem level using various types of experimental ecosystems, i.e. microcosms. The direct effect of exposure to cyperemthrin, a pyretroid insecticide, was a rapid decrease of crustancean zooplankton in enclosures in a lake. READ MORE
